Hello Everyone
The last few days have been personally a roller coaster ride of emotions. On Thursday, I received a call from a Veterinarianâs office in Plymouth, Ca. They had a dog come in that had been hit by a car and the leg had to be amputated. The owner of this dog could not afford the surgery and elected to have the dog put to sleep. The vetâs office asked if I would be willing to take the dog and I said âyes.â The dog's name is Lily. She is only a year and half old, sweet as pie and is a fantastic LGD. I wonât go into details but I was aware of the situation with Lily long before I received this phone call. I knew where Lily lived and who she belonged to.
This is where things get emotional for me. On Friday, the vet's office called me to say the vet will NOT put Lily to sleep, he believes she is worth saving. I was so happy.
A few hours later, I heard through the grapevine that someone on the property released Lily to a local rescue in that area. Again, I said to myself, okay good at least she is alive and will get the care she needs. Uh not so fastâŠ..I got another call from the vetâs office saying a person on the property signed a waiver for animal control to come and pick up Lily and have her put to sleep. As we all are aware shelters have no problem with putting dogs to sleep.
The vetâs office gave me two backdoor numbers to the shelter. I called them immediately. Luckily, I was able to get a hold of the director. He said unless rescue could be secured by the end of the day Lily would be put to sleep. I was 4 hours north of the Shelter and it was 2:30 on a Friday. He also informed me that Lily had been living with a broken leg for almost a month. He said she didn't look good and wasnât eating or drinking. Ouch, I was under the impression this just happened. So I called (crying) to a friend who was also aware of this situation and asked for help. I updated her of the situation. Bless her she dropped everything, rearranged her schedule and said she would drive up on Saturday and pick up Lily from the shelter. Thankfully the shelter agreed to hold Lily until Saturday.
On Saturday, a vet from Abby fitted Lily with a device called a Robert Jones Bandage. It stabilizes the leg and relieves some of the pain by offering the leg some support. I have attached a video.
You guys know I donât ask very often for help. This is where I need some help. Had I not just spent close to $5.000 getting 8 dogs spayed and neutered in the last 3 weeks this wouldnât be an issue. The person who picked up Lily works at the Abby Veterinary Hospital. She has pulled lots of strings and was able to get the operation severely discounted. The vets office in Plymouth said it would be around $3,000. My friend or perhaps she is Lily's angel, was able to get the performing vets to donate their time and we only have to pay the cost of supplies. Lilyâs surgery is still going to cost close to $1,000.00.
Her surgery is scheduled for this Wednesday.
