From classroom lessons to cold-water streams — these students got to experience conservation in action! 🐟🌊

Students from Shady Spring Middle and Coal City Elementary recently released the rainbow trout they helped raise through the Trout in the Classroom project into the Piney Creek Watershed and its tributaries.

This hands-on experience gave students the opportunity to learn about aquatic ecosystems, water quality, conservation, and the importance of protecting our natural resources right here in southern West Virginia. Watching these students connect science with the outdoors made this project truly special.

Programs like Trout in the Classroom help inspire the next generation of environmental stewards by showing kids that they can play a real role in protecting the waters and wildlife around them. 💙

WV Project WET is partnering with Project Learning Tree and Project WILD to host a Wetland Workshop at Twin Falls State Park.

We had a wonderful afternoon celebrating a ribbon cutting of the new Stanaford Grove Trailhead and trail system! 🚲 Take note Beckley and surrounding areas.

Piney Creek Watershed Association , based in Beckley, is a 2026 Stream Partners Grant recipient! This funding will support their watershed projects like water monitoring, Fly Fishing With The Youth, Trout In The Classroom and wetland enhancement. Congratulations!

Congratulations to all the recipients of this year's Stream Partners award! We are proud to accept, and look forward to continuing our work in 2026 on behalf of the Piney Creek watershed and all of its community members.

Governor Patrick Morrisey recently announced more than $100,000 in 2026 Stream Partners Program grants to support watershed groups across the state working to protect, restore, and promote West Virginia’s rivers and streams.
