Hello friends! Penny here, your friendly certified facility therapy dog. I might just look like a fluffy puppy (my human family sometimes tells me that!), but as you can see in my picture, I take my job here at Just for Kids very seriously!
Today, I wanted to share some very important advice for families about a scary word: SECRETS. Secrets can sometimes feel like a heavy bone, hard to carry and making you uncomfortable.
My friends at the center and I want every child to know that keeping SECRETS that make you feel scared, worried, or sad is never okay. If someone asks you to keep a secret, especially an adult, and it doesn't feel right in your tummy, that's a clue that it's NOT a good secret. Good secrets are like surprise birthday presents, they make everyone happy! Bad secrets make you feel the opposite.
PARENTS: Talk to your kids often about the difference. Let them know they can always tell you, or another trusted adult, anything, no matter how big, small, or scary the secret might feel. Creating an environment where they feel safe to speak up without judgment is key.
Our goal here is to keep children safe and help them feel brave enough to tell someone if they are hurting. Sometimes that safe space starts with me giving a comforting snuggle. But it always includes grown-ups who are here to help.
Together, let's break the silence and make sure our kids know they never have to carry bad secrets alone. We are here for you!
