Another spring Kids Run Club season is wrapping up! Despite the slow start to the season due to snow days and cold weather, 32 schools participated this season, with over 860 kids and 55 volunteers. Many schools wrapped up the program in May, but a few have final practices and Fun Runs scheduled in early June.

Thank you to all the volunteers who make the Kids Run Club program possible!

"I feel that the grant funds are the success of the club! We are a Title I school that has many diverse cultures and families, many of our students are students at the university and there are not a lot of extra funds. What I appreciate is that the mini-grant allows us to provide resources to the students without having to have a fee like other running programs (Girls on the Run tuition). Medals and the extra funding toward prizes really made year 3 the best one yet!" says Stephanie Cummings of North Elementary. "In my opinion, it [the Kids Run Club program] has drastically changed the culture of our school! Teachers from all over the school, parents, and counselors have sung the praises of the Run Club. From conversations around the building to the excitement happening during club, kids are excited to be active and look forward to the club. In passing, students will ask coaches what we are doing that day and looking forward to being active! Even my current class of students are looking forward to being able to join the run Club in third grade. They are excited to be active."

June is Brain Health Month, making it the perfect time to explore how moving your body directly transforms your mind. While a brisk walk or outdoor hike keeps your body physically fit, regular physical activity delivers scientifically proven benefits to your cognitive health. Walking regularly does far more than just close an activity ring on your smartwatch.

The Science of Movement and Mind
When you engage in physical activity, you spark a series of positive chemical and structural changes inside your head. Moving your body regularly supports cognitive function through several key mechanisms (https://rpb.li/hCYWTo):

Boosts Blood Flow: Physical activity increases blood circulation, delivering a vital surge of oxygen and nutrients directly to your brain cells.

Grows New Cells: Exercise stimulates neurogenesis, the process of growing new nerve cells, while simultaneously strengthening the vital connections between existing ones.

Sharpens Memory: According to research highlighted by Harvard Health Publishing, regular exercise physically boosts the size of the brain regions that control memory and critical thinking: https://rpb.li/6XbQC

Regulates Mood: Moving helps balance your emotional state by regulating stress hormones like cortisol, which reduces anxiety and lifts your overall mood.

Connect with Nature, Protect Your Mind
Naturalist John Muir famously wrote, β€œIn every walk with nature, one receives far more than he seeks.” Combining physical movement with the great outdoors multiplies these mental benefits. Studies show that walking in green spaces lowers psychological stress, improves attention span, and enhances problem-solving skills compared to walking in urban environments.

Boost Your Brain for Free with Active SWV
Active SWV offers a variety of free, community-led physical activities perfect for celebrating Brain Health Month. Led by Community Captains, these inclusive programs provide a supportive space to move your body, meet neighbors, and experience the brain-boosting power of nature.
