People love to say, you should have paid your bills.

With what money?

Sometimes there was not enough.

Sometimes a parent had $100 and had to decide whether to buy groceries or make a credit card payment.

Sometimes rent came before a collection account.

Sometimes medicine came before the car payment.

Sometimes keeping the electricity on came before everything else.

That is not somebody refusing to take responsibility.

That is somebody being forced to decide which emergency gets handled first.

If you have never had to make those choices, be grateful.

But do not sit in judgment of the people who have.

When you lose someone you love, the world does not stop sending bills.

The mortgage is still due.

The car payment is still due.

Creditors still call.

But sometimes you are so broken that you cannot even remember what day it is.

You are trying to plan a funeral while realizing you will never hear that person's voice again.

You are going through their belongings.

You are waking up and remembering all over again that they are gone.

So no, paying a credit card may not be at the top of your mind.

Grief does not care about due dates.

A credit report will never show how hard it was for you to keep breathing during that time.

Some women do not leave abusive relationships with money, perfect credit, and a moving truck.

They leave with a bag.

They leave with their children.

They leave while he is at work.

They leave in the middle of the night.

They leave behind their clothes, furniture, vehicle, bank account, and everything they worked for because staying could get them killed.

Some discover that their abuser opened accounts in their name.

Some were forced to sign for debts.

Some were never allowed to work or control their own money.

Then they finally escape, and the world looks at their credit report and asks why they were so irresponsible.

She was not irresponsible.

She was being abused.

She did not ruin her life.

She saved it.

I had a client whose credit was damaged while she was going through cancer treatment.

She was extremely sick and could not keep working and paying everything.

Imagine fighting to stay alive and then being made to feel like a terrible person because some bills did not get paid.

She was not out shopping.

She was not living irresponsibly.

She was trying not to die.

Her credit report showed late payments and negative accounts. It did not show the treatments, the sickness, the exhaustion, or the fear.

It did not show how hard she fought to survive.

That is why I will never look at someone's credit report and assume I know their story.

Sometimes bad credit is not evidence of irresponsibility.

Sometimes it is evidence that somebody survived.

Before you judge someone for having bad credit, ask yourself what might have happened to them.

Maybe they had cancer and became too sick to work.

Maybe they were being abused behind closed doors and secretly planning how to escape.

Maybe their spouse died and left them trying to survive on one income.

Maybe they became disabled.

Maybe they lost a child.

Maybe they were sleeping in their car.

Maybe they were trying to keep the lights on for their children.

Maybe someone they trusted stole their identity or opened accounts in their name.

Maybe they were so depressed they could barely get out of bed, much less open another collection letter.

You do not know what people have survived.

A credit report shows the damage.

It does not show the storm that caused it.

When I had my office in Beaverton, I had a client sit across from me and tell me about the horrible things that had been done to her.

She completely broke down.

She was sitting across from me crying, trying to explain what she had survived and how her life and credit ended up where they were.

I could have stayed behind my desk and kept the conversation professional.

But that is not who I am.

I got up, walked around my desk, and hugged her.

Sometimes people do not need another lecture. They do not need another person pointing out everything that went wrong.

Sometimes they need someone to look at them and say, I believe you. I see you. What happened to you was not okay.

That woman was not a credit score sitting across from me. She was a human being who had been hurt.

People need compassion. They need love. They need mercy.

If we actually cared about one another instead of constantly judging one another, this world would be a much better place.

This industry loves to talk about scores going up. Nobody talks about the 2am math. The lying awake doing numbers you already know don't work kind of night. I built this whole business because I've had those nights too, and I know how much it helps to just have someone say "yeah, that's real, and you're not alone in it."
