Want to keep your loved one out of a nursing home? Get them into a community that moves them around often.
It does not take very long for our bodies to get used to being sedentary, and then our minds do the same. Isolation and a lack of hope follow quickly behind, we were meant to move and to be in community.💪🏽

Jaxon began serving with Miah Families last December and has shown up for multiple Meet-Ups since then.

You could say he has to—after all, his mom, Ashley, is our Event Manager. But that’s not the story.

Jaxon doesn’t simply show up, sit back, and wait to be served. He digs right in, helping with whatever needs to be done. He is patient and kind with people of every age and ability—and with his own siblings when they attend, too.

With curiosity and compassion, Jaxon is learning what it means to build a community where everyone can contribute. No labels. No dividing people into those who serve and those who are served. Just people recognizing the equal value and worth in one another.

At Miah, we believe proximity changes everything. When we share life, serve side by side, and make room for everyone’s gifts, meaningful relationships grow.

Thank you, Jaxon, for showing us what it looks like to be a contributor. This is how community is built. And thank you for your courage to sing and dance and grow with us.

This is Miah.

We met her at our June Blooming Together Block Party Meetup. Her grandmother brought her to the event, and we had met her grandmother a few weeks earlier at a gas station—funny enough, the same one where we met Bj Tate.

Her grandmother has a beautiful classic car, so we asked if she would bring it to the event. She generously agreed—to bring what she had and contribute it to our community.

That’s what MIAH means.

The name MIAH comes from Nehemiah, a leader who lived about 2,500 years ago. When he learned that Jerusalem was in ruins—its walls broken, its gates burned, and its people living with years of loss and uncertainty—he chose to help the people rebuild together.

Nehemiah didn’t rebuild the city alone. He organized the people with care, helping them remember who they were, what they were called to do, and how they could contribute to one another.

Each person took responsibility for a part of the wall and brought what they had. And together, they rebuilt their city in remarkable time.

That’s the part of the story that inspired MIAH.

Thousands of years later, we still live in a world that often sorts people by what they need:

Who needs care?
Who needs housing?
Who needs help?
Who has the resources to provide it?

At MIAH, we’re asking a different question:

What does each person have to give?

Wisdom. Time. Friendship. Resources. Experience. Joy. Skills. Creativity. A meal. A connection. A listening ear. A place to belong.

We believe strong communities are built when every person’s contributions have a place to meet—not when a few people become responsible for everyone else.

That belief is rooted in the Scripture of the Bible, and in the story that gave MIAH its name. And because our differences are what make us better, all people, of all beliefs have a place here. All are welcome and belong. Nehemiah’s story leaves us with a deeply human invitation we can all relate to:
Bring what you have.
Build the part you can.
And don’t build it alone.
That’s the community we’re building at MIAH, where different is better together.

Our September Meet-Up is all about doing a little good, meeting someone new, and enjoying a beautiful Oregon afternoon together.

📅 September 21
⏰ 12–2 PM
📍 Jenkins Estate | Beaverton

Come ready to pick up a little litter, pick a w**d, pick a new friend—or simply pick a comfortable spot and enjoy being together. There’s no requirement to “do” anything to belong here. You can serve, encourage someone else, explore, create, eat lunch, or just spend time with new and familiar friends.

We’ll have:

🌿 A simple outdoor service/gardening project
🔎 A fall scavenger hunt
🎨 An outdoor craft
🛝 Time to enjoy the ADA-accessible playground
☔ Covered areas for gathering and plenty of space to spread out
🧺 Lots of time to picnic, visit and connect

Bring your own lunch and we’ll provide beverages, a small treat and snacks to share.

There’s plenty of parking, accessible spaces, covered gathering areas, and options for people with different mobility and comfort needs.

This one is meant to feel easy: come as you are, participate however you’d like, and spend a couple of hours enjoying community.

💚 All ages and abilities are invited.

This month, we’re keeping it simple: pick up litter, pick a w**d, a leaf, pick a new friend… or just pick a place to sit and enjoy being together.

Me + You = All We Need!
A brief glimpse into the talent we experienced this weekend. Better together filled the room with tears and laughter. We will be sharing more of our performers stories and their courage over the next few weeks.
