if frank lloyd wright has taught us anything, it’s that a house is truly so much more than just a place to live ā˜ļø designed by john bednarski in 1956, the dale house in amherst, massachusetts takes inspiration from wright’s principles of organic architecture, embracing natural light, thoughtful design, and a connection to the outdoors. consider this my love letter to homes that make you feel something šŸ’Œ

excuse me… there’s a heated indoor saltwater pool looking out into the forest? šŸ‘€

this 1966 home designed by thomas vadnais is already a dream ~ with rich wood interiors, vaulted hemlock ceilings, three fireplaces, and a wraparound deck suspended among the trees 🌲 built to bring the outdoors in, it’s the kind of pacific northwest architecture that feels both dramatic and incredibly inviting. currently adding this one to the list of homes i may never stop thinking about 🫢

currently reading Verity and i have a feeling this house is going to be just as haunting as the story itself šŸ“– the sharp rooflines, endless windows, and sleek, almost otherworldly design make this place feel like it’s keeping a few secrets of its own…

this is the martha & ted nierenberg house, also known as beckoning path, designed in 1960 by danish designer jens quistgaard. tucked away on 27 acres in armonk, new york, its dramatic architecture is most definitely the perfect setting for a psychological thriller šŸ‘€ have you seen the movie yet?

the fact that this house exists because a woman basically wrote frank lloyd wright a fan letter šŸ“ millie ablin wanted a wright house for her family in bakersfield, and despite assuming he would never actually take the project, he designed this incredibly unusual usonian home for her and her husband 🫢

the entire house plays with geometry ~ angled walls, a diamond-like plan, deep rooflines, and a triangular pool ~ while the huge windows and open living spaces make the whole thing feel surprisingly connected to the landscape. even the pink color has a story: it happened because of a construction mistake, and the family decided to keep it šŸ’— what a unique home and story to go with it

okay but before we talk about Robert Oshatz’s new Royal Five development… can we talk about what he was designing in Portland in 1984?!

this is the Rosenthal Residence, aka the ā€œTriangle House,ā€ tucked into a wooded hillside and designed as a spec home by Oshatz. he worked under Lloyd Wright, Frank Lloyd Wright’s son, and that organic architecture influence definitely shows ~ but honestly, I’m still stuck on the fact that the bridge into the house is also the carport. 😭 brilliant

here are the hikes i fit into one weekend at Mount Rainier šŸ‚šŸ„¾ and honestly, the fall colors were already SO good ~ with even more to come over the next few weeks!!

if you’re planning a fall trip, i’d definitely put the Skyline Trail + Bench and Snow Lake Trail on your list for the foliage. Comet Falls was a little different since there isn’t as much fall color, but the waterfalls make it completely worth it, and it felt noticeably quieter than some of the more popular trails.

save this for anyone planning a Mount Rainier weekend soon :) which trail are you adding to your list? 🌾

this feels like Charlie Swan’s house if Charlie Swan suddenly had an Olson Kundig architect budget and an unconventional art collection. 🦌

Agate Pass Cabin began as a rundown 1938 beach cabin overlooking Agate Passage, eventually becoming architect Alan Maskin’s own 1,100-square-foot retreat 🌲 the original wood was preserved and repurposed throughout the renovation, while the modern additions ~ and that enormous bronze face ~ give it a very different kind of PNW cabin energy.

fun fact: that giant head, called ā€œ:)ā€ is a cast-bronze piece by Sutton/Beres/Culler, meant to reference home surveillance. honestly, seems pretty fitting for Charlie’s house. he has a lot to keep an eye on. šŸ§›šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļø

i posted this house last year and honestly… i’m not over it ~ so here we are again.

hillside house by HELIOTROPE sits on orcas island, where the rugged landscape has been drawing people in for generations. the home was designed with that landscape in mind, minimizing disturbance to the site and using local materials to create something that feels less like a house dropped into the woods and more like it belongs there. the design in itself is brilliant… but imagine waking up to those views everyday 😩😩 a dream

a midcentury time capsule that truly deserves the title šŸŽ„ designed by architect John R. Gatewood for his own family in 1956, this Southwest Hills home still has its original built-ins, cork floors, period fixtures, Mt. Adams stone fireplace wall, and even a vintage mural in the dining nook. Gatewood lived here for 50 years!! ~ and honestly, if you designed a house this good, wouldn’t you? 🫢
