New info on clogged ducts! Ask us if you have questions!

I know, I know some of you are saying, “YES you can! I’ve seen the clog/plug come out myself and/or have seen videos of it happening!”

BUT the truth is… this IS NOT the clog itself.

— WAIT WHAT? ⬇️

New research by the ABM reveals that plugged ducts are areas in the breast/chest where inflammation has occurred, causing reduced milk flow (also called “ductal narrowing”).

It was previously thought that thickened milk formed the “plug” or “clog” that impeded milk flow in a single area and if you could just suction/get that out then — problem solved. However, it is now understood that this is NOT the case.

The thickened or static milk happens as a RESULT of the underlying problem which is inflammation and subsequently ductal narrowing. So, unless we address the root of the problem, INFLAMMATION, you may continue to experience repeated clogged/plugged ducts.

📢 NO AMOUNT OF:

❌ Pumping
❌ Extra feedings
❌ Haaka epsom salt soaks
❌ Heat/hot water
❌ Dangle feeding
❌ Squeezing
❌ Massaging
❌ Vibrating
❌ Suctioning

Is going to fix the ACTUAL issue (INFLAMMATION).

♦️These all actually make the problem worse because they increase inflammation, irritation, and can potentially cause tissue damage.

INSTEAD we want to decrease inflammation and narrowing of those ducts and get to the ROOT of the problem by:

✔️Seeking help from a lactation professional
✔️Using anti-inflammatories such as ibuprofen (consult a healthcare provider)
✔️Using sunflower lecithin (consult a lactation/healthcare provider)
✔️Utilizing cold instead of heat
✔️Avoid heavy massage/squeezing
✔️Maintaining your NORMAL feeding/pumping schedule (no extra stimulation)

The Lancet recently launched a new series for breastfeeding education, and apparently it nods to a culture that promotes pumping over feeding at the breast. I’m not sure the Lancet’s viewpoint is accurately depicted in this blog post, but what are your thoughts? Should we be advocating as much for a workplace culture that protects direct breastfeeding as we do for a workplace culture that protects pumping?

“By the time my youngest had moved onto solid foods, I had spent hours on hours staring at my breast pump, imagining all the ways I could im...

This is a BIG struggle of mine.

I stumbled upon an old article that felt almost confrontational to read (in the best way).

I’m a fixer. I want everyone around me to be happy (I’m working on it 🥴). When my children aren’t happy, I often struggle with internalizing THEIR emotional response as my own personal failure.

At some point between babyhood and preschool, I started to recognize this specific anxiety in myself- this sensation of needing to fix my child’s emotional response or their situation to always maintain “happy”: the need to make sad into silly, to give into all their requests, to avoid upset reactions in my children.

What I’m realizing now, and what I’m working towards, is to allow more room for my kids to hold their own emotional experiences without interrupting or correcting them. My job isn’t always to eliminate what they’re responding negatively to, and many times I won’t be able to. My job is to hold them through it.

Your baby’s colic isn’t a reflection of you.

Your toddler’s screaming isn’t a personal failure.

It’s okay if your child is upset that you won’t give them a fourth piece of bread and are offering strawberries instead.

Success isn’t fixing everything. We can’t always make our kids happy, but we can be there for them no matter how they feel.

August 21, 2015 What Does It Mean to 'Use You as a Pacifier?' August 21, 2015/ Nancy Mohrbacher Nursing parents are commonly warned: “Don’t let your baby use you as a pacifier.” Although often said, this is an incredibly curious statement. After all, which came first, nursing or the pacifier? ...
