🚒 The Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians is providing another $8,000 for Beaver Island, this time for a winter fire-safety project.

🌊 Nearly $5 million in FEMA flood assistance has reached northwest Lower Michigan, with an August 31st application deadline.

💡 There’s something new on display with the freshly cleaned Fresnel lens at Beaver Head Lighthouse, thanks to some Island craftsmanship.

🃏 And the Queen is still hiding at the Elks Lodge, with the pot now just shy of $12,000.

🌐 About 20 Islanders turned out for an update and discussion on a 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆-𝗼𝘄𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗶𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗯𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗱𝗯𝗮𝗻𝗱 to every location on Beaver Island. We’ll tell you what they heard—and how you can weigh in.

🌱 St. James Township has chosen a 𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗰 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻 for the campground area being used for fiber construction, passing on proposals for RV camping or a Dark Sky observation area.

🌲 And Michigan is moving to 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝟰,𝟱𝟬𝟬 𝗮𝗰𝗿𝗲𝘀 of Keweenaw Peninsula forestland before it can be divided for private development.

𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗰 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲. The other plans were for an RV camping area and an outdoor planetarium. Drawing from St. James Township

The BIA's 𝗕𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗱𝗯𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗲 together with the 𝗝𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁 𝗧𝗼𝘄𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀 𝗧𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗲 (JTAC) has a 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗺𝗲𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗻 𝗯𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗱𝗯𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝘁 𝟱:𝟬𝟬 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗜𝗖 𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿. A proposal to build a community -owned Island-wide fiber network will be discussed covering what it would cost, how it could be financed and what would be necessary to make it happen. There also be an update other projects along with the opportunity for comments, questions and to complete an anonymous survey.
