We are incredibly grateful for two very generous gifts recently made to TUNES.

The family of 𝐉𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐲 & 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐚 𝐏𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞 donated a piano for our studio, and 𝐓𝐚𝐭𝐞 & 𝐀𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐥𝐚 𝐌𝐜𝐁𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐦 gifted us a brand-new PA system for our student performances.

Both will be put to great use and will benefit our students and programs for years to come. Gifts like these allow us to continue building a space where our students have access to quality instruments and equipment, while allowing more of our resources to go directly toward music education and programming.

Labor Day weekend just got a little louder!

Come hang out on the patio at the Circle M and catch the TUNES Rock Band live! These young musicians have spent the year learning, practicing, performing, cheering each other on, and becoming a real band along the way. And if you've seen them play lately, you know they know how to put on a show!

We invite Beaver Island youth 𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐬 𝟗–𝟏𝟖 to register for our first 12-week session of the 2026–27 school year, beginning the week of 𝐒𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝟏𝟒. Please complete a separate form for each child in your family. (Adult registration to come - scholarships dependent on youth attendance numbers.)

Through the TUNES scholarship program, these youth lessons are offered 𝐚𝐭 𝐧𝐨 𝐜𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐟𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐬.

The registration form may look a little different this year, but the concept is the same. Whether you’re a returning student or someone who has always wanted to give learning an instrument a shot, we welcome you to a program focused on building 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞, 𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐦𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐜.

One of the most unique things about learning music on Beaver Island is that it often extends far beyond a weekly lesson.

We are fortunate to have so many talented and supportive adult musicians in our community who encourage our young musicians, play alongside them and give them opportunities to experience what it means to actually be a musician. In many ways, it is a continuation of something that has always been important on Beaver Island: 𝐦𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐜 𝐛𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐧𝐞𝐱𝐭.

One of our favorite moments from this past year captured that perfectly.

Ryley Maudrie’s guitar teacher, Paul Lamb, was mid song with the Doghouse Boodlers when he walked off the stage, handed Ryley his guitar and sent him up to finish his spot.

And Ryley did.

He stepped onto that stage, joined a group of seasoned island musicians and played. But what we loved just as much was watching the musicians around him. They welcomed him in, encouraged him and made him feel like he belonged there.

If there’s a young person in your life who wants to make music, we’d love to have them join us. 🎶

𝐓𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐚𝐭 𝟕 𝐏𝐌 𝐚𝐭 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐬’ 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞, Norah Rendell and Brian Miller will lead a 𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐋𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐬 𝐒𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐩 that feels especially fitting for Beaver Island.

Norah will teach a song or two, and Brian will take us deeper into the history behind the music, exploring the Irish-influenced songs that were collected throughout the Great Lakes and the white pine belt of North America.

Brian is a 𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐋𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐬 𝐈𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐦𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐜 𝐡𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧 whose work focuses on finding, researching and bringing these regional songs back to life. Through The Lost Forty and his Northwoods Songs project, he has spent years researching rare traditional songs, including music connected to the Great Lakes region. His work has been featured on 𝐈𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝’𝐬 𝐑𝐓É 𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐨 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐓𝐆𝟒, as well as 𝐌𝐏𝐑 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐂𝐁𝐂 𝐑𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐨, and his research earned him the 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐅𝐮𝐧𝐝 𝐀𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐀𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐅𝐨𝐥𝐤𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐂𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐋𝐢𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬.

For Beaver Islanders, this is a pretty unique opportunity. Our island’s Irish roots and musical history are woven into the larger story of Great Lakes music, and tonight is a chance to hear how those songs traveled, changed and survived from one generation to the next.
