𧑠Why We Encourage Seniors to Save Seniors π§‘
At If Cats Ruled The World Feline Rescue, every adoption decision begins and ends with one question:
What gives this cat the greatest chance at lifelong stability, security, and happiness?
That question guides every adoption approval, every adoption denial, and every policy we have.
One policy that occasionally raises questions is our decision not to place young kittens with adopters over the age of 72 unless there is a documented long-term care plan in place for the cat.
Before reading further, please understand this:
This policy is not based on a lack of respect for senior citizens.
In fact, many senior citizens make phenomenal pet owners. They often have more time, more patience, more life experience, and more love to give than many younger adopters.
This policy is not about how much someone loves animals.
It is about the lifetime needs of the cat.
πΎ A Kitten Is a Long-Term Commitment
A healthy kitten today may live 15, 20, or even 25 years.
When we place a kitten, we are making a commitment to that animal's entire lifeβnot just the next few years.
As rescuers, we have to think beyond today's circumstances and ask difficult questions:
Who will care for this cat 10 years from now?
15 years from now?
20 years from now?
What happens if the owner becomes ill, enters long-term care, or passes away?
These are uncomfortable questions, but responsible rescue work requires us to ask them.
Applicants near or above our age threshold must have a clear, documented plan for the cat's future care in the event of illness, incapacity, or death.
π What Rescue Sees Behind the Scenes
Many people assume that family members will gladly take a beloved pet.
Sometimes they do.
Many times they do not.
As rescuers, we routinely see cats displaced after the death or incapacitation of their owner.
Some are surrendered to shelters.
Some are abandoned.
Some are simply put outside and expected to survive.
Yes, that happens.
Far more often than most people realize.
As the founder of If Cats Ruled The World Feline Rescue, I have personally witnessed cats being promptly put outside by surviving relatives, heirs, property managers, and even real estate agents who simply did not want the responsibility.
Those are difficult realities we encounter in rescue work.
The lucky ones make it to a shelter.
The truly fortunate ones find their way to a rescue willing and able to take them.
Many never receive either opportunity.
We do not share this reality to be harsh.
We share it because it is real.
And because every adoption decision we make must be based on what is most likely to happenβnot what we hope will happen.
𧑠Why We Encourage Seniors to Save Seniors
Senior cats are among the most overlooked animals in rescue.
Every day, wonderful older cats are passed over simply because they are no longer kittens.
Yet these cats have so much love left to give.
They are often calmer, already litter trained, established in their personalities, and incredibly grateful for a second chance.
When a senior citizen adopts a senior cat, something beautiful happens.
A life is saved.
A companion is gained.
And the likelihood of that cat being displaced later in life is greatly reduced.
The age and life stage of both the adopter and the cat are often much better matched.
We call it:
πΎ Seniors Saving Seniors πΎ
It is one of the most meaningful adoptions we see.
By choosing a senior cat, you are giving a deserving animal another chance at love, comfort, and security during its golden years.
π‘ This Is Not About Excluding People
We are not trying to prevent anyone from experiencing the joy of pet ownership.
We are trying to ensure that every animal entrusted to us has the greatest possible chance of lifelong stability and security.
That responsibility belongs to us.
Sometimes that means making difficult decisions.
Sometimes that means saying no to an adoption that feels good today in order to protect the cat's future tomorrow.
Not every applicant will agree with every decision we make.
And that's okay.
Our obligation is not to make the most popular decision.
Our obligation is to make the decision that is in the best interest of the cat.
Every time.
Because at If Cats Ruled The World Feline Rescue, every decision is made with the cat's lifetime welfare in mind.
