June 28, 2024 marked the 25th anniversary of South Carolina First Steps, which has helped over one million children through 46 local affiliates and 300 First Steps 4K providers. It also coordinates early childhood programs statewide.
Founded by former Governor Jim Hodges as a public-private partnership, First Steps ensures children start school ready for success. Hodges recently spoke at an anniversary event honoring key contributors.
Since 1999, First Steps has served over one million young children and their parents. Since 2006, 30,019 children have attended free First Steps 4K kindergarten. First Five SC, launched in 2022, has helped over 270,000 people access public services online.
Governor Henry McMaster praised First Steps for its educational impact, especially through its 4K program.
First Steps became a permanent agency on June 19, 2023, ending its temporary status.
Executive Director Georgia Mjartan celebrated the organization's impact on over a million children and parents. First Steps supports families with nurturing homes, learning opportunities, quality care, and necessary interventions. For local programs, visit first5sc.org.
