In the sewing world, this Thursday, April 30 is National Destashing Day! Consider donating your fabric stash to Sewing For Babies-Gage County where it will be turned into a much needed item for babies and moms in need. We appreciate cotton, flannel and interlock knit fabric; neutral color thread, and yarn. You may bring your donation to 923 West Court Street in Beatrice on:
Monday May 4 from 9 am - noon or
Monday May 11 from 9 am - 2pm

Sewing for Babies-Gage County is so grateful to the Margaret and Martha Thomas Foundation, Beatrice Community Hospital Foundation and Quilt Stitches for their support to purchase new sewing machines for our group. Ann from Quilt Stitches provided training today for our new Bernina 335 machines and our Bernina L 860’s. They are great machines!

We are so thankful for the generous grant from the Margaret & Martha Thomas Foundation for new sewing machines! The machines were purchased from our local Bernina Dealer, Quilt Stitches. They are set up and we tried them out today. What a difference it makes to work with equipment that is in good shape!! Our lines were straighter, the machines ran much smoother and they were much much quieter!! It was a joy to sew. And we didn't have anything break down!!

Do you need a place to donate your unwanted flannel or knit fabric, or yarn? Sewing For Babies accepts these items and you can drop them off at our workshop the first or second Monday of each month from 9 am to noon.

Sewing For Babies Gage County had a great year! In 2025 we created and donated 2,989 items to the WIC program in Fairbury and Tecumseh (serving Beatrice), and the Willow Center in Beatrice. Samples of items we created are pictured below. We created 500 bibs, 400 changing pads, 400 burp cloths, 215 gift bags, 235 diaper bags, 335 quilts, 358 receiving blankets and fleece blankets, 9 sundresses, 100 Christmas stockings, 250 sleepers, 150 ouch buddies, and 13 wash cloths.

We are grateful to the Beatrice Hospital Foundation, Gage County Big give, numerous civic groups and individuals for their financial assistance and gifts of fabric, and to Marv & Lisa Goossen for our work space, and to the 15 ladies who dedicate their time and sewing skills.
