We were very grateful to the Yuba River Endowment and Community Military Appreciation Committee to have us out this morning to share what Operation Warm Heart does and look forward to opportunities to collaborate in helping our Beale AFB community. We are so grateful for all of our communities that support us.

Sometimes the greatest challenges come when they're least expected.

After recently relocating to Beale, one of our Airmen and their family were still navigating the financial strain that often comes with a permanent change of station when they faced an unexpected emergency. Their baby was born eight weeks early and required an extended stay in the NICU at a hospital that was a distance from their new home.

With affordable family lodging at capacity and other financial assistance options unavailable, the cost of staying close to their newborn quickly became overwhelming.

Thanks to the generosity of Operation Warm Heart, we were able to provide assistance to help cover temporary lodging expenses, allowing the family to remain near their baby during those critical first weeks.

Because of your support, this family was able to focus less on financial stress and more on what mattered most—being together during a difficult and uncertain time.

This is what Operation Warm Heart is all about: neighbors helping neighbors, Airmen supporting Airmen, and ensuring no family faces life's toughest moments alone.

This is why we do what we do. We absolutely love getting cards like this in the mail.

What is Operation Warm Heart?

Operation Warm Heart (OWH) is a nonprofit initiative led by Air Force First Sergeants Councils on various bases to provide financial aid, food, and support to Airmen, Guardians, and their families, particularly during the holidays or times of hardship.

Key Usage Examples and Support Types

• Thanksgiving/Holiday Meals: Distributing food baskets and full Thanksgiving dinners to families in need.
• Financial Relief: Providing grants or funds for essential expenses, such as emergency travel, rent, or utilities, often for junior enlisted Airmen.
• Holiday Assistance: Giving gift cards or paying off layaway balances at the base Exchange, or running Angel Trees.
• Emergency Support: Assisting with unexpected disasters, such as providing funds for fuel or cleaning supplies during local flooding.

How it Works

The program is funded by donations from local communities, corporations, and fundraisers. Individuals seeking help or wanting to donate should contact their local First Sergeant, as chapters operate at various Air Force bases, including Beale & Travis AFB'.

A young Airman experienced an unexpected setback after their laundry, including essential clothing and military uniforms, was stolen from a shared facility. Their First Sergeant quickly verified the situation, confirming the Airman had only been away briefly. Unfortunately, the items were never recovered.

Support from the uniform room and the Beale Thrift Store helped replace some of what was lost, but key items were still missing. Living on a tight budget, the Airman faced the added stress of needing to quickly repurchase required clothing.

Operation Warmheart stepped in, providing $300 to help cover essentials like uniform t-shirts, socks, and other necessary items. While it may seem like a small loss to some, moments like this can have a significant impact, especially for those already stretching every dollar.

Because of support like this, one Airman was able to recover quickly and refocus on their mission and reminded that they are not alone.

During the past government shutdowns, a member of Beale AFB found themselves in an unexpected financial crisis. Although pay had stopped, they were reassured that back pay would come and initially believed their family would be okay. But as weeks passed, a complication arose, paperwork issues meant their back pay was delayed, requiring resubmission and further waiting.

With the holidays approaching and two young children at home, the situation became more urgent. Savings that were meant to provide stability were quickly drained by essential bills, and uncertainty grew as government offices closed for the holiday season. What was once manageable now felt overwhelming.

Reluctantly, the member reached out to their Unit’s First Sergeant, asking if there was any way Operation Warmheartn or another resource, could provide a small amount of support to help their family get through.

Operation Warmheart answered that call without hesitation. They provided a zero-interest loan, offering immediate relief and ensuring the family could stay afloat during a time of uncertainty. When the delayed back pay finally came through, the service member repaid the loan early, grateful not just for the financial assistance, but for the compassion and quick support that carried their family through a difficult moment.

Stories like this are a reminder that even those who have steady government employment through the military can face unexpected hardship, and that timely support can make all the difference.
