In 1966, folk singer Pete Seeger and a group of activists wanted to take action to stop the pollution that was destroying the Muhheakantuck (the indigenous Lenape name for the Hudson River). Three years later, the iconic sloop Clearwater was launched, with a mission to save the Hudson. Over fifty years later, Clearwater, dubbed America's Environmental Flagship, is recognized for its award-winning

programs, which dramatically enhance classroom learning, are all aligned to NYS Learning Standards and aim to create the next generation of environmental leaders. Guided by a set of core environmental values, Clearwater works cooperatively with concerned citizens, elected officials, and state and federal regulatory agencies to find solutions that create healthy Hudson River ecosystems free of pollutants.

When a team of researchers recorded a low thundering underneath the surface of the Hudson River, they thought they were hearing the muffled rumble of trains.

A closer look, and listen, led to a much more interesting discovery: the thunder came from Atlantic sturgeon – an iconic and endangered species – spawning in the depths of the river.

“It’s almost that you feel it more than you hear it,” said Maija Niemistö, science educator with the New York State Water Resources Institute (NYSWRI), a joint research center with Cornell and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC).

“You can hear these chirps and squirts and bubbles underwater, but this is a different experience entirely. These are ancient fish, and the thunder – it’s almost like you’re brought back in time, because they’ve been making this sound, communicating with each other, for millions of years. It’s awe-inspiring.”

In a collaboration between the NYSWRI, NYSDEC, the Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s K. Lisa Yang Center for Conservation Bioacoustics, Cornell’s Department of Natural Resources and the Environment (DNRE), and others, the team has confirmed the thunder of the Atlantic sturgeon for the first time, publishing the study in Endangered Species Research in 2025.

That study was conducted in a known sturgeon spawning ground; this spring, the team placed additional underwater recorders in areas of suspected spawning, some of which are not protected.

Happy ! This week's is the Northern Puffer, also known as the blowfish. As described by its name, these fish inflate like balloons using air or water when they feel threatened to appear larger.

We encounter the northern puffer in our nets in the salty water of New York Harbor. Seldom more than ten inches long, those we catch are usually young fish, only a few inches long. Puffers are brownish or greenish above, white below, with some dark markings along the sides and sandpaper-like prickles covering their head and body. Their teeth form a beak used to nip at clams and other bottom life they consume.

🚨 Federal funding for the National Estuarine Research Reserve System (NERRS) is under threat!🚨

NERRS protects ecologically significant estuarine areas across 24 states and Puerto Rico through a network of 30 research reserves conserving over 1.4 million acres of estuarine lands and waters while supporting collaborative science, long-term ecosystem monitoring, and hands-on education and training.

Here in the Hudson Valley, the Hudson River National Estuarine Research Reserve (HRNERR) at Norrie Point Environmental Center facilitates citizen science, diverse education programs, and and manages four critical wetland habitats along the Hudson estuary: Stockport Flats, Tivoli Bays, Iona Island Marsh, and Piermont Marsh, and much more.

Our next benefit concert for Clearwater will feature genre-blending singer-songwriter, Jenna Nicholls on Saturday, July 11 at TheLocalSaugerties. With four albums under her belt, Jenna’s latest album, The Commuter, produced by three-time Grammy winner Larry Campbell, delivers vintage Americana with a fresh, cinematic feel. The concert will be opened by Hudson Valley native and seasoned singer-violinist Dorraine Scofield.

2026 marks the 60th anniversary of founder Pete Seeger’s first fundraising concerts for the sloop, and the start of Clearwater’s musical heritage that continues to this day. This event is a project of the Clearwater Festival.

This week's Fish Friday is the smallmouth bass! Like the largemouth, the smallmouth bass is a member of the sunfish family. They live in freshwater, but unlike largemouth bass, they prefer rockier areas and cooler waters. Both species have large mouths, but the jawbone of the smallmouth extends back only to the midpoint of the eye, while the largemouth’s reaches to the rear of the eye or beyond. Smallmouths are bronze or brownish in color, and they may have vertical bars on their sides. Smallmouth bass are a fish often sought by those fishing in the Hudson River. Due to PCB contamination of Hudson River fish, NYSDOH - New York State Health Department maintains fish consumption advisories outlining who can safely eat what fish, from where in the river, how frequently, and in what quantities.
