💚 This week, our "cousins" at Green Teen Poughkeepsie came to visit Beacon for a fun-filled morning of games, team-building, and friendship!

There are only two chapters of Green Teen in the world, so these partnership moments really mean everything to our mission. And if the City of Beacon Recreation teen program gets to join in once in a while? All the better!!

💚 Green Teens are the leaders of tomorrow's community, which means they need to be ready for any situation. That's why we asked Medical Reserve Corps of Dutchess County to train our crew in Citizens Preparedness and Stop The Bleed.

These two super engaging hands-on seminars helped our crew understand the importance of having a plan for everything from power outages to flooding to pandemics, as well as how to help someone who has experienced a life-threatening injury. Every youth got a backpack of emergency supplies to help them start their readiness journey.

Thank you to Wendy, Mitch, and Antony for the important work you do for our community every day! And an additional thanks, once again, to the veterans at the Memorial Building for the use of their space. 💚 Cornell Cooperative Extension Dutchess County

💚 A great big Green Teen thank you to Heritage Financial Credit Union for their excellent and engaging Financial Literacy training!! It isn't easy to get young people excited about budgeting, but Kelly from HFCU made it look easy. The summer season might be almost over already, but now our crew will have the tools they need to make every paycheck really count!

💚 Green Teen is all about the vegetables, but the story of where your food comes from doesn't stop there! That's why we took a trip out to Stormfield Swiss this afternoon. Jen DeForest and her family welcomed us to their farm to learn a little bit about dairy.

This was an awesome opportunity to learn about how to care for dairy cows, how the milk is collected and processed, and even about what it's like to have your job be right in your backyard. It was also an awesome opportunity to learn how cute baby cows are. (Very cute, is the answer.)

💚 How much can a dozen teenagers get done in an afternoon? Well, the answer might surprise you- as it did our friends at Obercreek Farm!

In just two and a half hours, our crew helped complete what might have been a full day's work otherwise. Sure, pulling up landscape plastic and dripline is hard work, but riding in the truck, taste-testing shish*to peppers, and working alongside real farmers is well worth it.

And who is our favorite farmer? It's probably a tie between Farmer Scooter (former GT crew leader) and Farm Dog Margot (accomplished vole hunter). But we're grateful for the whole Obercreek team! 💚 The sun is shining, the birds are singing, the fish are leaping out of the river, and the Green Teens are back on Bannerman Island!

This was our sixth visit to the Island, where we helped the most dedicated gardeners in the valley with watering, revitalizing, and fertilizing their gardens. No small feat, considering the Island has no running water and uses a pump to draw water up from the river!

Once the hard work was done, the crew got to enjoy an afternoon of exploration and learned a little local history at the same time. We're so grateful to our friends at Bannerman Castle Trust for their continued enthusiasm and warm welcome to our youth. 💚 Anyone smell that? Smells like teamwork!

Our Summer ’26 crew had their first big project in the garden this week, harvesting garlic and setting it in the shed to dry. A few members from our Fall ’25 crew were especially excited to help harvest, since they were the ones who planted this garlic all the way back in autumn! It was equally exciting for our returning Spring ’26 crewmembers, who spent part of their season weeding the garlic bed and harvesting early garlic scapes.

In other words, this crop is the result of an entire year of Green Teen teamwork! 💚 Cornell Cooperative Extension Dutchess County
