Thank you to Steve Forsythe for sharing this bit of history about the start of Texas Young Farmers!
Ag Education History-
The State Association of Young Farmers of Texas.
Ran across some old news clips featuring past Ag Ed pioneers.
A 1954 profile of pioneer Lubbock area Agricultural producer and the first President of the Texas YF’s - Alton Brazell.
He was instrumental in the realization that learning is a life-long process and wanted an organization that would serve post FFA member age men involved in Production Agriculture- Brazell and a group of pioneers in the Panhandle came together in 1950, first calling themselves “ Ag Clubs” and then FFA Alumni.
In 1954, the organization became the State Association of Young Farmers of Texas, later receiving a TEA Charter.
E.L. Tiner and other TEA State staff members helped Coordinate the Young Farmers over the years - Billy Conner, Billy Lyons, Dan Gattis, Dwayne Pavelock, and Kirk Edney, to name just few.
In 1969, Billy Conner and Ralph Mosher met with Area 4 Young Farmer Chapter representatives in Leadership Training Meeting as profiled in a Comanche newspaper. At that time I believe Conner reported there were 360 YF programs across Texas.
In 1978, U.S. Senator John Tower was the keynote Speaker at the Area 2 YF Convention in Midland, Texas. YF State President Ronnie Stewart assisted in the Convention proceedings.
After TEA moved FFA and YF’s out from under their umbrella in the 90’s-
Don Beene and others have continued to serve the organization admirably as Executive Secretary .
As an Ag Teacher and even through today, I always loved the organization for its focus on Community Service and continuing Agricultural Adult Education.
Dan Gattis, Hulan Harris, and Billy Conner assisted me in chartering a YF chapter in 1974. Later while at Lampasas, a Lampasas County Young Farmers Association was established with an organizational meeting held the Lampasas County Farm Bureau Building. TYF State Officer Alan Macik assisted in the meeting.
One of the first things the YF’s did was to develop and Sponsor an Ag Mechanics Project Show as part of the annual County Show!😀🙏🦉
