Happy Back-to-School Sunday!

08/08/2026

Start your school year right with LOVE! Join us this Sunday, August 9, at 9:30 AM for crafts, activities, refreshments, a school supply drive, a blessing of the backpacks (and minds) and more!

School Supply Drive:
Our youth are collecting school supplies of all kinds to share with students in need through Communities in Schools, De Zavala Elementary, and Lee College. Bring your donations to the collection box in the Narthex. Thank you so much for your generosity.

Blessing of the Backpacks (and Minds):
In worship, we’ll invite students from pre-k to grad school, school employees, and retired educators to come forward for blessing as we thank God for the time we have been given to learn. If you have a backpack, bring it! If you need a backpack, we’ve got one for you!

The United Methodist Church has long been considered the Church of Education. From the birth of our movement at Oxford University to today, we celebrate the gifts of thought, creativity, and instruction.

“Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of the mind, so that you may discern what is the will of God—what is good and acceptable and perfect.”

One of our beloved church members, Sherry White, has passed from life into Life Eternal. We praise God for the time we were blessed to share with her. Her spirit of generosity and joy is forever woven into the story of our congregation, and we know she will continue to cheer us on as part of the great gathering of witnesses in Heaven.

Her celebration of life will be on August 8 at 11:00 AM at Love United Methodist Church, 712 Schilling Ave, Baytown, TX. 77520.

Sherry Lee White, 74, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on July 24, 2026.

Sherry was born in Menomonie, Wisconsin, to William and Marjorie Millar, and grew up on the family's dairy farm. She attended school in Menomonie until her family relocated to Hudson, Wisconsin. A proud 1970 graduate of Hudson High School, she married her high school sweetheart, Stan White, later that year on October 10, 1970.

In 1975, Sherry and Stan moved to Baytown, Texas, where she immediately began pouring her heart into the community. Her life was defined by service, leadership, and an unwavering love for youth. She was a dedicated member of the Baytown Optimist Club for 33 years, beginning in May 1992. Throughout her decades of service, she held numerous leadership roles, including serving as president for three years and secretary for ten years. Sherry was a passionate advocate for local children, organizing youth football registrations and managing concession stands. She was also deeply committed to the Welcome Stranger program, which brings joy to the community by gifting a family in need with Christmas presents each year. Sherry loved sharing the club's mission with others and successfully signed up 20 new members throughout her lifetime. Her exceptional leadership earned her countless accolades, including being named Optimist of the Year three times, and she took great joy in attending 15 international conventions.

Sherry also dedicated 49 years of her life to Beta Sigma Phi, from February 1977 until her passing. She was a deeply valued life member, serving as chapter president three times and honored as the chapter "Sweetheart" on multiple occasions.
Her faith and community spirit shone brightly at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, where she shared her beautiful voice in the choir, volunteered with the food pantry, and coordinated local blood drives. Beyond her extensive volunteer work, Sherry's greatest loves were her husband, music, traveling, and mentoring the youth of Baytown.

Sherry was preceded in death by her parents, William Millar and Marjorie Price Poe; her brother, Allen Millar; and her sister, Cindy Millar. She is survived and dearly missed by her devoted husband, Stan White; her beloved children, Shelby White and Scott White; and her brother, Bill Millar.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 AM on August 8, 2026, at Love United Methodist Church, located at 712 Schilling Ave., Baytown, TX 77520. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Sherry's memory to the Baytown Optimist Club scholarship fund at P.O. Box 695, Baytown, TX 77522.

Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord and perpetual light shine upon her!
