CLARK'S OR SECRET BEACH (GREENPORT, NY) – LIMITED DIVING ACCESS AND HISTORY

After several months of discussions and cooperation with the Village of Greenport, Secret Beach is once again available on a limited basis for scuba and skin diving through the efforts of the Long Island Divers Association (LIDA).

For more than 40 years, Secret Beach has been regarded as one of the premier shore-diving locations on Long Island. Over the years, countless individuals have earned their diving certifications there, while experienced divers have had the unique opportunity and privilege to explore the waters of Long Island’s North Shore from this exceptional location.

Anyone wishing to utilize Secret Beach through the Village’s locked gate must comply fully with all of the NEW rules and requirements.

The Long Island Divers Association (LIDA) Needs Your Help!

Are you a SCUBA Diver, free diver, marine enthusiast, conservation advocate or just simply someone who is looking to apply your skills to help our association reach a larger audience?

Are you a student looking for some valuable intern experience?

The Long Island Divers Association has an opportunity for you!

LIDA is seeking a motivated individual willing to donate some free time to LIDA by heading up a social media marketing campaign for our upcoming annual winter Gala.

As a volunteer, you will curate, create and distribute marketing material over a variety of social media channels in an effort to garner a larger audience for our February 6th event. FaceBook, InstaGram, TikTok and any other social media platform you are comfortable with will be your distribution channels. Hopefully, some of your posts will go viral but all of them will surely have impact!

You will gain valuable experience in the area of social media marketing while helping LIDA and the local diving community.

As part of the team running this event, you will be given complementary access to the annual LIDA Winter Gala as a token of our appreciation.

Location: Long Island Aquarium in Riverhead, New York.

In Memory of Captain John (Jack) Lachenmeyer: A Pioneer of Shipwreck Diving

John Lachenmeyer was not just a diver; he was a passionate explorer of the ocean’s hidden stories. Renowned for his deep-sea adventures, John dedicated his life to uncovering the mysteries of shipwrecks, bringing to light the tales of those who sailed the seas long before him. His contributions to wreck diving were celebrated in numerous diving publications, where his insights and discoveries inspired countless others.

With an unquenchable thirst for adventure, John’s dives often took him to some of the most challenging and remote wreck sites. His research and preparation set a standard for safety and responsibility in the diving community.

John’s legacy extends beyond the depths of the ocean; he fostered camaraderie among fellow divers, often sharing his knowledge and experiences with those eager to learn. His spirit of adventure and respect for the ocean will continue to resonate in the hearts of divers and ocean enthusiasts alike.

As we remember John Lachenmeyer, we honor a life dedicated to the sea, one that will inspire future generations of divers to explore, respect, and protect the underwater world. John encountered many wrecks with a grapple in hand during his diving days.

We enjoyed being Captain John's friend; he will be missed by many.

A memorial visitation and religious service are scheduled for him on Saturday, June 6, 2026, at Commack Abbey, Inc.
