In Memory of Captain John (Jack) Lachenmeyer: A Pioneer of Shipwreck Diving

John Lachenmeyer was not just a diver; he was a passionate explorer of the ocean’s hidden stories. Renowned for his deep-sea adventures, John dedicated his life to uncovering the mysteries of shipwrecks, bringing to light the tales of those who sailed the seas long before him. His contributions to wreck diving were celebrated in numerous diving publications, where his insights and discoveries inspired countless others.

With an unquenchable thirst for adventure, John’s dives often took him to some of the most challenging and remote wreck sites. His research and preparation set a standard for safety and responsibility in the diving community.

John’s legacy extends beyond the depths of the ocean; he fostered camaraderie among fellow divers, often sharing his knowledge and experiences with those eager to learn. His spirit of adventure and respect for the ocean will continue to resonate in the hearts of divers and ocean enthusiasts alike.

As we remember John Lachenmeyer, we honor a life dedicated to the sea, one that will inspire future generations of divers to explore, respect, and protect the underwater world. John encountered many wrecks with a grapple in hand during his diving days.

We enjoyed being Captain John's friend; he will be missed by many.

A memorial visitation and religious service are scheduled for him on Saturday, June 6, 2026, at Commack Abbey, Inc.

>> A Group Travel Guide to Europe’s Malta

THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA begins where the Rock of Gibraltar strains to meet Morocco to the west and splashes on the shores of Syria, Israel and Lebanon to the east. Europe stretches to the north and Africa to the south.

It is a body of water that is home to a rich history of civilizations past and present that have plied these waters for economic benefit, cultural exchanges and furious conflicts.

For divers, Malta’s crystal-clear waters and intriguing underwater terrain, coupled with fascinating sunken history, create an exciting dive destination. Indeed, this is no secret among European divers who visit these islands frequently but for North American divers, Malta remains exotic and somewhat underpublicized.

>>> In the Shadow of Captain Jack Sparrow: Diving St. Vincent and The Grenadines

In the opening scene of Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl Captain Jack Sparrow, portrayed by Johnny Depp, arrives into the harbor of Port Royal on a sinking boat and smoothly steps onto an awaiting dock just as his ship slips below the water. The expertly filmed sequence introduced Depp’s character to the world and launched what is arguably one of the most successful movie franchises in history.

Just as the fictional Captain Jack Sparrow was inspired by tales of authentic pirates, we arrived in St. Vincent determined to explore this island’s underwater world similarly inspired by stories of robust coral reefs and intriguing macro life.

>>> Exploring the Emerald Coast: A Guide to the Best Wrecks of the Florida Panhandle

The Gulf Coast along the Florida Panhandle is sometimes referred to as the Emerald Coast due to the distinctive green color of the water. This is caused by the reflection of sunlight off the white quartz sand and the shallow, clear waters of the Gulf. It was here, in Pensacola, that we began our journey to explore some of the wrecks lying beneath the waves.

Our first dives were to the wreck of the USS Oriskany.
