What is the Long Island Divers Association (LIDA)?
LIDA is a not-for-profit regional organization dedicated to the promotion of local diving, the representation of divers interests throughout the diving and general community, and the protection of divers rights through outreach to our local and regional government officials.
Why Become a Member of the Long Island Divers Association (LIDA)?
Your membership helps protect the future of diving on Long Island. Being a member means that you support the work that protects your ability to dive on and off Long Island.
LIDA is an all-volunteer, nonprofit organization. Our members volunteer thousands of hours working with town, county, state, and federal agencies to protect diver access, open new dive sites, improve access to existing sites, protect historic wrecks, support artificial reefs, and make sure the interests of recreational divers are heard when decisions are being made about our waterways.
What has your membership helped accomplish?
LIDA gives Long Island divers a voice. For over 40 years, LIDA and its members have:
• Helped open numerous dive sites and snorkeling locations throughout Long Island.
• Worked with government officials to preserve access to threatened dive locations.
• Helped preserve Culloden Point and improve diver access to the historic HMS Culloden wreck, preserved diving at the Old Ponquogue Bridge, helped establish and support artificial reefs off Long Island, including the sinking of the Dauntless and Relentless on the 12-Mile Reef and worked with government agencies to protect access to locations such as Clark's Beach/Secret Beach and other threatened waterfront areas.
• Worked with the U.S. Navy and other agencies concerning access to offshore wrecks.
• Provided educational programs and introductory SCUBA and snorkeling opportunities, including education on Liveaboard safety for traveling divers.
• Supported efforts that helped bring hyperbaric chamber facilities to the area.
Why does LIDA need your membership?
LIDA operates entirely through volunteers.
Your membership dollars go toward the relatively small but necessary costs of keeping the organization operating and allowing volunteers to do the work.
Membership helps pay for things such as Insurance and organizational expenses, website and communications, printing and educational materials, meetings and outreach, government and community outreach, educational programs, advocacy efforts, projects that benefit Long Island divers and the administrative costs necessary to maintain a nonprofit organization
The value of LIDA lies in what we work to preserve and create for every diver.
A new access point can benefit thousands of divers for years. A preserved dive site can remain available for future generations. An artificial reef can become a destination for divers, habitat for marine life, and an economic resource for the local diving community. A voice at the table when regulations are being discussed can prevent decisions from being made without considering the needs of divers.
