Since its inception in the 1771, the Society of The Friendly Sons of Saint Patrick has been an active, vibrant organization within the Irish community in America with Chapters throughout the Country. Members of the Hudson County Chapter, founded in 1962, meet every other month to conduct Society business, enjoy fellowship, and share the experiences of our common heritage. The Society has always be
en non-denominational, welcoming members from all religious backgrounds. Citizens of the United States of Irish lineage, over eighteen years of age and of good moral character are eligible for membership. The Society exists to promote Irish culture, education, and provide aid. It performs these duties in the form of a lecture series, scholarships, and charitable events, as well as through other events and activities. Our chapter has been active in supporting Project Children, a non-profit dedicated to helping the childhood victims of the conflict in Northern Ireland, and providing scholarship funding. Since its inception, our chapter has sponsored the Annual Mass for Peace in Northern Ireland at Saint Aedan's Church in Jersey City, and honors the Friendly Sons of Saint Patrick Irishman of the Year. In 2011, the Friendly Sons completed an eight year fundraising campaign to erect a memorial to commemorate those who lost their lives in the Irish Famine (1845-1852) and to honor those who immigrated to our shores and helped build the United States of America. The monument was installed in Lincoln Park in Jersey City and officially dedicated on May 9, 2011. The Society's activities are directed by the Board of Trustees and a number of standing and ad hoc committees.
