In May, students and educators in Guyana focused on one of the most important pillars of character: TRUSTWORTHINESS.

Through We Are GUTSY, Inc.’s monthly CHARACTER COUNTS workshops, teachers discussed how to create classroom environments where students feel safe telling the truth, owning mistakes, asking for help, and learning from difficult moments.

The conversation centered on what trust really looks like in a classroom: clear expectations, calm responses, praise for honesty, and a focus on solving problems instead of punishing students for telling the truth.

Even with heavy rain disrupting connectivity at times, the discussion continued with energy, honesty, and purpose.

We are grateful to the teachers, students, and primary schools who participated, including Stella Maris, St. Margaret’s, Providence, Stewartville, Malgre Tout, Mashabo, and Paramakatoi.

Trustworthiness is not just taught in a lesson. It is modeled, practiced, and strengthened through the relationships students build with the adults who guide them.

This month’s CHARACTER focus was Responsibility, and Azalia and Nathan showed exactly why these lessons matter.

Azalia was named our April CHARACTER Champion for her composition about a situation at home where she had to make a difficult choice. She could stay silent while her sibling was wrongly blamed, or she could take responsibility for her mistake. Azalia chose to do the right thing and was forgiven by her mom.

Nathan was also honored for his essay about the responsibility he felt for his younger sister, who was new to school and timid around more seasoned students. He described his new role in the family and the steps he took to help her feel more at ease at school.

We also proudly recognize Stella Maris Primary and St. Margaret’s Primary for their participation in GUTSY’s CHARACTER skills initiative.

Through this monthly initiative, We Are GUTSY, Inc. recognizes students who are learning the PILLARS of CHARACTER and showing what those lessons look like in real life.

Congratulations to Azalia and Nathan. We are proud of the responsibility, honesty, care, and character you are showing.

Meet Azalia, our April CHARACTER Champion.

This month’s CHARACTER focus was Responsibility, and Azalia showed what responsibility can look like in a real moment.

In her composition, she wrote about a situation at home where she had a choice. She could stay silent while her sibling was wrongly blamed, or she could take responsibility for her mistake.

Azalia chose to do the right thing.

That kind of honesty and courage is exactly why We Are GUTSY, Inc. created the CHARACTER Champions initiative. These lessons are not just about words. They are about helping students recognize the choices they make every day and the impact those choices have on the people around them.

Congratulations, Azalia. We are proud of you.

GUTSY stands for Guyanese United to Serve Our Youth.

Our workshops are built around one simple belief: children need more than lessons. They need guidance, example, consistency, and character they can carry into everyday life.

Through We Are GUTSY, Inc., educators in Guyana come together to focus on the CHARACTER PILLARS and how those values can be taught in real classrooms with real children.

The upcoming workshops will focus on trustworthiness, respect, fairness, and caring.

Each session gives teachers time to talk, reflect, share what they are seeing in their schools, and bring these lessons back to their students in a meaningful way.

This is the work.

Helping children build the kind of character that follows them into their homes, friendships, communities, and futures.

Our next GUTSY workshop is May 20, and the focus is trustworthiness.

We will be working with educators in Guyana on how to help students understand what it means to be honest, truthful, dependable, and loyal.

These are lessons children carry with them.

When a child learns to tell the truth, keep their word, and do the right thing even when it is not easy, that lesson reaches far beyond the classroom.

GUTSY stands for Guyanese United to Serve Our Youth. Through our CHARACTER PILLARS workshops, we are helping educators bring these values into everyday school life in a way children can understand and practice.

One workshop at a time.
One classroom at a time.
One child at a time.

We Are GUTSY, Inc. is proud to introduce our first CHARACTER Champions.

This new initiative was created to recognize students in Guyana who are not only learning the PILLARS of CHARACTER, but showing real growth in how they live them.

Each month, participating schools may nominate one student who demonstrates how the character lessons have made a positive difference in their behavior, choices, and daily life.

Congratulations to our first winner, Ciara Abraham of Malgre Tout Primary, and our runner-up, Marianna Phillips of Mashabo Primary.

This is the work that matters most: helping children in Guyana build character, responsibility, and life skills they can carry into their classrooms, homes, communities, and futures.
