Join fellow history buffs for a special fundraising trip on the famous Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, benefiting the Animas Museum and the Southwest Colorado Humanities Roundtable. The journey includes a visit to the Tacoma Power Plant, where electricity was first transmitted to Silverton in May 1906. Thanks to the Durango & Silverton Railroad and Xcel Energy for making this event possible.

The train departs downtown Durango at 9:15 a.m. on Tuesday, April 21st, and returns at 2:30 p.m. Onboard, local historian Charles DiFerdinando will share insights on the region’s history, the railroad, and the power plant. Tickets are $100 with space limited to just 42 people. Reserve your spot today from animasmuseum.org or at https://swcohumanities.org/product/train-ride/.

Before ethnology was a scientific discipline, Lewis and Clark collected stories, songs, and artifacts from the dozens of distinct cultures they encountered in their journey west. They kept detailed notes on tribal customs and collected vocabulary to create a rough outline of a dictionary of Indian Languages. In this dynamic performance, Brian "Fox" Ellis shares both folklore and true history from the American Indians met along the way. The audience sees something of the transformation of the Corps of Discovery as they adapted to Native American life ways and they hear about life before the white man came.

The goal of these programs is to bring to life the ideas and perspectives that have shaped our world.

Meet America’s pre-eminent poet as Brian "Fox" Ellis peforms the story of Walt Whitman's life, intermingled with the poems we have all grown to love. Hear eloquent selections from “Leaves of Grass,” and his philosophy of free verse. Listen to tales of the Civil War in poetry from “Drum Taps.” Celebrate the life of Abraham Lincoln in his eulogy “Oh, Captain, My Captain.” Few poets have transformed poetry or captured the voice of America like Walt Whitman.
