Backpack Buddies FBC BSL Backpack Buddies FBC BSL provides food to needy students at South Hancock, Waveland, and North Bay El

Backpack Buddies is a program that provides elementary school students, living in "food insecure" homes, with food to take home over the weekends, during the school year. Bags are stocked with nutritious, child-friendly, easy-to-prepare food and distributed to children on the last day before the weekend. The children, identified by school principals, guidance counselors, and teachers, receive a ba

g containing 3 entrees, 2 breakfasts, 3 sides, 3 snacks, 1 juice at the end of every week. This program is essential to help relieve hunger in economically disadvantaged homes, which in turn will improve grades, health, school attendance and self-esteem in these children. Our faith-based organization provides the food storage space. Our volunteers give of their time to purchase and organize food items, pack bags and transport food to the schools. For the 2015-2016 school year, Backpack Buddies has been delivering bags to 25 food insecure students at one local Elementary School. Our goal is to serve all six public elementary schools in Hancock County, MS. In order to do this, we will need more financial support and food. The cost to provide the food items to a food insecure student averages $3.80 per week and $254.00 per school year. The cost to provide this program to one school for the entire year is $5,805.00. We will eventually need more volunteers for purchasing, packing, and delivering food as we add more schools. We are currently packing the bags at the First Baptist Church, Wednesday nights at 6pm bi-weekly. For further information call Jeni Ward 228-344-0197 or email [email protected]

Our Story

Backpack Buddies is a national program that provides elementary school students with food to take home over the weekends during the school year. These students are identified by the school staff as not getting enough to eat at home. Food bags are stocked with nutritious, child-friendly, easy-to-prepare food and discreetly distributed to the children by the school staff each Friday. This program is essential to help relieve hunger in economically disadvantaged homes, which in turn will improve grades, health, school attendance and self-esteem in these children. Since September 2015, First Baptist Church Bay Saint Louis has been providing the program here in Hancock County. We feed 75+ children each week at these 3 local elementary schools- South Hancock, Waveland Elementary, and North Bay Elementary. Our faith-based organization provides the food storage space. Our volunteers give of their time to purchase and organize food items, pack bags and transport food to the schools and raise funds to purchase the food. It cost $12,000 per school year to provide this program to needy children in our community. We pack the food bags every Wednesday night at 6 PM at First Baptist Church 141 Main Street, Bay Saint Louis. For further information call Jeni Ward 228-344-0197 or email [email protected].
