Join us for an afternoon of documentary film, art, spoken word, music, storytelling, and community conversation as we explore youth violence, gun violence, trauma, incarceration, racial inequality, and pathways toward healing, prevention, and second chances.

At the heart of this event is the story of Zy’Kiquiro “Zy” Lofton, a 15-year-old boy whose life was taken by gun violence, and the lasting impact his death has had on his family.

Through the documentary Broken Systems, Lost Sons, we invite the community to look beyond headlines and statistics and see the people, families, trauma, and systems behind them.

This event is more than a film screening. It is an opportunity for Georgia and Alabama communities to come together for an honest conversation about what young people need to thrive—and what it means to rewrite the systems and stories that shape their lives.

Attendees will experience:

What happens after the headlines disappear?

Broken Systems, Lost Sons follows one family’s experience after losing their 15-year-old son, Zy’Kiquiro Lofton, to gun violence—and the lasting impact that loss had on the family, including youth incarceration and the criminalization of young people.

This story is about more than one death. It’s about grief, trauma, youth incarceration, systemic inequality, and what happens when young people and families are left to survive without the support they need.

Through documentary film, art, spoken word, and community conversation, Rewrite the Story: Art, Justice, and Second Chances asks a difficult question:

What could change if we responded to trauma before we criminalized it?

Rewrite the Story brings film, art, music, spoken word, and community voices together to have honest conversations about youth violence, trauma, incarceration, racial inequality, and healing.

This fall, Hope Dealers is bringing this conversation to communities across the South:

Rewrite the Story: Art, Justice, and Second Chances is coming to Columbus, Georgia on August 29.

Join Hope Dealers, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, for an afternoon of documentary film, art, spoken word, music, and community conversation exploring youth violence, gun violence, trauma, incarceration, racial inequality, and pathways toward healing and prevention.

The event centers on the story of Zy’Kiquiro “Zy” Lofton, a 15-year-old boy whose life was taken by gun violence, and the lasting impact his death had on his family. We’re honored to bring Rewrite the Story to communities across the South.

This isn’t a reentry event. It’s a movement to confront the realities of youth violence, trauma, systemic inequality, and the lives forever changed by them.

Broken Systems, Lost Sons began with one family’s experience following the loss of Zy’Kiquiro Lofton, a 15-year-old whose life was taken by gun violence.

In the years that followed, the family faced continued challenges affecting multiple siblings, including youth incarceration and one sibling being charged as an adult while still a teenager.

This documentary goes beyond one tragedy. It explores what happens after loss—the grief families carry, the impact on communities, and the realities many young people face growing up surrounded by violence, trauma, systemic inequality, and the daily fight to survive.

Through film, photography, poetry, and visual art, Rewrite the Story creates space for reflection, healing, and meaningful community conversation.

Each event will feature:

This event exists to honor the life of Zy’kiquiro Lofton, amplify his family’s story, and raise the funds needed to help relocate the Lofton family to safety. Every dollar raised through the silent auction goes directly to the Lofton family.

Rewrite the Story: Broken Systems, Lost Sons is more than an art show or documentary screening. It is a community gathering that explores the lasting impact of youth incarceration, violence, grief, trauma, and survival on families long after the headlines disappear.

This July, we’re sharing a story that goes beyond the news coverage.

🎬 Broken Systems, Lost Sons is a documentary exploring family, violence, incarceration, survival, and the systems that shape life in South St. Petersburg.

Join us on July 11 for Rewrite the Story: Art, Justice, and Second Chances—an evening featuring an art exhibition, documentary screening, spoken word, community conversation, and silent auction benefiting the Lofton family.

Special thanks to Somebodys Coffee for partnering with us and to Bri for sharing her knowledge and perspective in the film.

That's how many times 15-year-old Zykiquirio Lofton was shot on December 29, 2022 in St. Petersburg, Florida. He was walking. He was home for the holidays. He was somebody's oldest son, somebody's best friend, somebody's big brother to four younger kids.

And the man who killed him? He was already out on bond for killing an 87-year-old man in a hit-and-run, just 33 days earlier. He had an ankle monitor. That ankle monitor placed him at the scene.
The system knew who he was.

The system let him out anyway.
And Zy paid for it with his life.

"Broken Systems, Lost Sons" is a documentary that tells this story — all of it. The murder. The aftermath. The systemic targeting of Zy's surviving brothers. The injustice that didn't end on December 29th.

We're screening it on July 11 — alongside an art show and silent auction where 100% of proceeds go directly to relocating the Lofton family to safety.
They deserve to start over somewhere new.

The least we can do is show up.

"He was still moving. He was fighting — because that's what he did. He was a fighter."

Those are Jessica Lofton's words about her son Zy, spoken in the days after she watched him be taken from her on December 29, 2022. He was 15 years old. He was home for the holidays. And even in his final moments, he fought.That spirit didn't die with him.

On July 11, we're gathering to honor that fight — with an art show featuring local artists, children's work, and the Lofton family's own poetry and words. Every dollar from the silent auction goes directly to relocating this family to safety. Six months of rent. A real chance to breathe somewhere new.

Zy fought until the very end.
