We would like to recognize Dr. John Dew.
Dr. John Robert Dew, board member of the Alabama Performance Excellence Program, retired as Senior Vice Chancellor for Student Services and Administration for Troy University in 2018. He was responsible for administration and student service at all four of the University’s campuses in Alabama, along with responsibility for strategic planning, institutional effectiveness, regional accreditation, online learning, and the University’s locations in Korea, Japan, Texas, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. Prior to his work at Troy University, Dr. Dew served as the Director for Continuous Quality Improvement and Strategic Planning for The University of Alabama.
Dr. Dew began his career with Lockheed-Martin Corporation where he worked as a quality professional and was responsible for leadership and executive development for the Lockheed Martin Energy Division before joining The University of Alabama.
Dr. Dew has led workshops on quality management with Catholic University in Lima, Peru, and has been a speaker at public universities across Canada. He has presented on quality methods in China and with the European Organization for Quality and has facilitated leadership development activities, strategic planning, and quality improvement activities with numerous businesses, manufacturing facilities, universities, school systems, research laboratories, healthcare organizations, local, state, and federal agencies and a wide range of non-profit organizations. He was appointed by the Secretary of Commerce to serve for three years as a Judge in the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award program and was appointed by the Secretary of Education to serve on a DOEd rule-making committee. Dr. Dew earned his Doctorate in Education from the University of Tennessee and wrote his dissertation on developing democratic leaders in organizations.
Since his retirement from Troy University in 2018, he has continued to represent the Alabama Performance Excellence Program’s mission of quality through his numerous professional endeavors. In the next few months, Dr. Dew will be speaking at the American Society for Quality's World Conference on Quality and Improvement in Philadelphia. His presentation is entitled "Changing the Game: Eight Approaches to Innovation." Dr. Dew has also been invited to be a featured speaker at the European Organization for Quality 2023 meeting in Porto, Portugal, where he will be speaking on quality in education.
The American Society for Quality will publish an article of his in the May 2023 edition of Quality Progress magazine titled "How Quality Is Saving Planet Earth." It will provide an overview of the 2021 and 2022 Quality and Sustainability Awards that the International Academy for Quality gave in the past two years. Dr. Dew serves on the IAQ Planet Earth Think Tank which originated and handles this award process.
Dr. Dew also has a draft manuscript for his next book, Quality and Workforce Development, out for review by members of the Workforce Development Network in ASQ's Education Division. In his retirement, he has also been facilitating strategic planning sessions for the College of Health and Human Services and the College of Education at Troy University.
