๐Ÿ’œ โ€œWhy don't they just leave?โ€

It's a question we hear far too often. And from the outside looking in, the answer might seem simple.

But for someone experiencing domestic violence, leaving can be anything but simple.

๐Ÿ’œ Maybe they're worried about their children.

๐Ÿ’œ Maybe their partner controls all the money.

๐Ÿ’œ Maybe they have nowhere safe to go.

๐Ÿ’œ Maybe they still love the person who's hurting them.

๐Ÿ’œ Maybe they've been threatened with what will happen if they try to leave.

๐Ÿ’œ Or maybe they're terrified that leaving could make things even worse.

The reality is, leaving an abusive relationship can be one of the most dangerous and difficult decisions a survivor makes.

And sometimes, even after leaving, the abuse doesn't stop.

This Domestic Violence Awareness Month, let's change the conversation.

Instead of asking, โ€œWhy don't they just leave?โ€ let's ask, โ€œWhat can we do to help them feel safe?โ€

Listen without judgment. Believe survivors. Offer support without pressure. And remember that everyone's path to safety looks different.

At The Crisis Center, we're here to help survivors explore their options, create safety plans, and find support when they're ready.

No judgment. No pressure. Just support. ๐Ÿ’œ

The Crisis Center and Childrenโ€™s Advocacy Center were proud to host โ€œHuman Centric Interviewing- Interviewing Skills That Strengthen Casesโ€ on October 20th at the Wharton Civic Center!

This full-day training brought together multidisciplinary professionals to strengthen their interviewing skills and enhance collaboration across the criminal legal system. Presented by The Blue Opal Collective- Kimberly Korrin, participants explored practical interviewing strategies grounded in trauma-informed practices, memory science, burrowed neurobiology, rapport-building, and authentic human connection.

From interviewing victims and witnesses to questioning suspects, these skills are essential to conducting effective interviews, strengthening investigations, and supporting the pursuit of justice.

A special thank-you to The Blue Opal Collective and Kimberly Korrin for sharing your expertise, and to the Wharton Police Department and Wharton County Sheriff's Office for supporting this training. We are also grateful to every professional who took time out of their schedules to invest in continued learning and collaboration.

When our multidisciplinary partners strengthen their skills and work together, we are better equipped to serve victims, support investigations, and build stronger cases.

Stay tuned for our next training in partnership with WCSO-Crime Victim's Family Violence/ Domestic Violence Risk Assessment & Lethality, Thursday, Nov 5 ยท 8 AMโ€“12 PM

They were friendly. Funny. Helpful. The person everyone seemed to love.

They showed up for their community, had friends, held a job, and seemed like someone who would never hurt another person.

So when someone finally spoke up about what was happening behind closed doors, people struggled to believe it.

"But they're such a good person."

"I've never seen them act that way."

"They've always been so nice to me."

Here's something important to remember:

Someone can be kind to you and still be abusive to their partner.

Abuse doesn't always happen in public. And a person's reputation doesn't tell you everything about what happens in their relationship.

When a survivor finds the courage to speak up, the last thing they need is to feel like they have to prove their experience because everyone else sees a different side of that person.

This Domestic Violence Awareness Month, let's remember that being well-liked doesn't make someone incapable of causing harm.

Listen without judgment. Take disclosures seriously. Offer support. ๐Ÿ’œ

You don't have to witness abuse to take someone's experience seriously.
