I am sorry to inform you, but the honey flow is over in Marietta. I witnessed one robbing incident this morning and the girls are cleaning any honeycomb I bring from an extraction.

TONIGHT: On Monday, May 11, our speaker will be Tucka Bee, a small scale commercial beekeeper, queen breeder, and candle maker, and owner of Tucka Bee, LLC. Tucka manages about 300 colonies in south Florida.

Our meetings are held at our new Westside Provisions District meeting space (1170 Howell Mill Road, Atlanta, Georgia 30318; corner of Howell Mill Road and 14th Street). Park in the WSPD parking deck (validated parking), and follow the MABA signs. The new meeting space is a former restaurant space located on the ground-floor level of the building immediately next door to the Flower Child restaurant, and directly across the street from Shake Shack. MABA meets on the 2nd Monday of each month, except September and December when we hold our annual fall honey show/pot luck and holiday party respectively.

Meetings begin with a mentoring session at 6:30 p.m., followed by a featured speaker at 7 p.m. This month's mentoring session will be led by Dave Marshall and will focus on honey harvesting.

On arrival, check-in at the welcome table to be entered into our monthly door prize drawing. Enjoy snacks and fellowship in the back of the room. Membership is not required. Everyone interested in honey bees is welcome! See less

Yesterday, eighteen members of MABA drove through the thunderstorm and rain to reach the largest beekeeping facility in the Southeast - Gardner Apiary in Baxley, Ga. We were greeted by Mr. Gardner and his wonderful staff. We went to a bee yard and shook our own bee packages in the rain (we couldn't control the weather). We observed employees grafting, separating and caging hundreds of queens. We toured the woodworking shop where they make nuc boxes, packages, supers, hive bodies and all things wood related.

Mr. Gardner treated us to a wonderful country buffet in Baxley.

Mr. Gardner has been a beekeeper since 1964 and has an incredible story. We left energized and inspired by an incredible beekeeper. Once in a lifetime opportunity...

Last week, we joined Room and Board Furniture's Earth Day celebration. We melted wax to make figurines, showcased an observation hive, and handed out 2 oz honey bottles. We were ready to extract honey on -site, lunchtime foot traffic was too light. This was our first collaboration between MABA and Westside Provisions. Thanks to MABA members volunteering their time: Jessica Jones, Franca Frossini, Marcella Archilla and Brian Barton.

On Saturday, May 2, MABA will offer UGA Certified Beekeeper testing. The Certified Beekeeper level is the first step of a four-step program in UGA’s Master Beekeeping program. MABA has been authorized by UGA to administer the exam here in Atlanta. To test at this level you must have at least one year's hands-on experience keeping honey bees. The official text for the program is the 2007 edition of First Lessons in Beekeeping, by Keith Delaplane, which is available for purchase from numerous online sources and at MABA meetings. The exam consists of a written and a practical portion, requiring approximately 2 hours to complete. Results are typically available two weeks after testing. To learn more and to register, see:
