We realized we failed to post our
May Challenge Coin Recipient last month..

Our May Challenge Coin recipient went to someone who has led by example throughout more than 36 years of nursing service. She first attended one of our summer meetings in 2024, and despite working full-time and maintaining a busy schedule, she knew becoming a member of the Nurse Honor Guard was something her heart was calling her to do. The mission of honoring fellow nurses who dedicated their lives to serving others spoke deeply to her heart.

She never imagined that her very first tribute would be honoring a close friend and member of her own staff. Like many of us, she quickly learned that serving in the Honor Guard is both a privilege and a sacred responsibility.

Shelley's nursing journey began with a dream she carried from childhood. After graduating from Baptist School of Nursing in December 1990, she began her career in the Surgical Trauma ICU at Baptist Hospital, working the 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. shift. She served there full-time until 1997 while also moonlighting with a nursing agency as a PRN nurse. In July 1997, she began working at Arkansas Health Center, then known as Benton Services Center. For about a year, she balanced shifts between both facilities before transitioning to full-time employment at Arkansas Health Center.
She transitioned into an ADON role in Feb 2005 then took on the DON role in July 2017.
This July, she will celebrate 29 years of dedicated service there.

Throughout her career, Shelley has demonstrated a steadfast commitment to her patients, coworkers, and the nursing profession. Within Legacy Keepers, she is known for her warm smile, positive attitude, and willingness to serve wherever she is needed. She is always ready with an encouraging word and a helping hand, quietly reflecting the compassion and dedication that have defined her nursing career. She is a 2026 Spirit of Legacy nominee, nominated by her peers.

Please join us in congratulating Shelley Gardner, RN, our May Challenge Coin recipient. We are grateful for the example she sets and for the kindness, professionalism, and servant's heart she brings to our organization.

Our June Challenge Coin was preaented to Mary Katherine Smith, a nurse whose journey began long before she ever stepped into a classroom or hospital.

As a little girl sitting through a thunderstorm, Mary Katherine told her mother that she wanted to be a nurse. It was a dream that seemed to come from nowhere. No one in her family was a nurse, yet somehow the calling was stirring in her heart.

That calling became even clearer when she was fifteen years old and her father underwent heart surgery at Baptist Hospital. During his hospitalization, Mary Katherine met a nurse whose compassion and professionalism left a lasting impression. Watching the care her father received confirmed what she had already begun to feel—nursing was where she belonged.

Her mother shared that dream as well. In a special twist of fate, while Mary Katherine was completing RN school, her mother was attending LPN school. Together, they pursued a profession built on service, sacrifice, and compassion.

After graduating from UA Little Rock in 1988, Mary Katherine devoted nearly four decades to caring for others. Her nursing career included St. Vincent's CCU, Saline Memorial Hospital, where she served as Charge Nurse on the Fourth Floor and Wilson Wing, Medical ICU at Methodist Hospital in Houston, and later the Heart Hospital, where she continued serving until an injury brought her bedside career to a close.

Throughout every chapter of her career, Mary Katherine became known for her calm presence under pressure. When others felt overwhelmed, she remained steady. When challenges arose, she met them with determination.

When asked about her greatest strengths, her answer was simple and heartfelt. She never gives up. She will fight for her family and friends, no matter the obstacle. And she loves with her whole being.

Those qualities cannot be taught in a classroom. They come from character, conviction, and a lifetime of choosing to care deeply about others.

Mary Katherine, your determination, your compassion, and your unwavering commitment to those you love have left a lasting mark on everyone fortunate enough to know and work beside you. It is our privilege to recognize your nursing legacy and present you with this Challenge Coin.

Members of Legacy Keepers Nurse Honor Guard of Arkansas had the privilege of joining friends & Family in Benton to pay tribute to a remarkable nurse.
Martha Emmett followed in her Father's footstep and joined the United States Marines when she was 19.
In 1985 after she had raised her family she answered the calling to be a nurse.
Graduated from Garland County Community College (now known as National Park College) as an LPN.
Martha dedicated her entire career to the care of those who could not care for themselves. The residents of Hot Springs Nursing Home and later those at Garland County Nursing Home saw Martha as family not just a nurse.
Martha delivered compassion to each person in her care until her decline in health forced her into retirement in 2008.
Martha missed her 86th birthday by just one day.
Her ancestors developed the very land she was buried on. The cemetery held six generations of her family under the Arkansas skies.

We would like to thank Hot Springs Funeral Home and Bro. Donnie Haynes (Kentucky Missionary Baptist church) and especially Martha’s family for allowing Legacy Keepers NHG have a small role in today's service.
