Northeastern University is introducing Pathway to Practice: Preparing Interpreters for Situations with Legal Implications

Northeastern University’s American Sign Language and Interpreting Education Program was awarded a U.S. Department of Education Rehabilitation Services Administration grant for $2.25 million to prepare interpreters to work with individuals who are Deaf and DeafBlind in situations with legal implications. The five-year project officially launches TODAY, October 1, 2026.

Legal interpreter education has traditionally focused on the courtroom. This project is about what surrounds the courtroom: the legal-adjacent situations interpreters encounter far more often, where people’s rights, benefits, and independence are on the line.

Fun Fact Friday:

My wife is a Nationally Certified American Sign Language Interpreter. Do you follow Michigan Storm Chasers? Have you noticed that "ASL Lady"? Yep! That's her!

She's been inundated with requests from people wanting to learn, so she'll be teaching classes here at the store starting September 29. There are a limited number of spots available, so sign up soon if you're interested!

Michigan Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf - MIRID's upcoming training session and business meeting:

Hosted at Mott Community College in Flint on May 30th and 31st, Michigan RID has a full weekend of training sessions focusing on DeafBlind, CDI / CHI team interpreting, and ethics.

For members, the business meeting is going to be pivotal this year as we address major concerns regarding the health and future of the organization.

Annual mini-conference to learn and network with Michigan colleagues. Support the organization at the business meeting.
