A young person does not have to reach a breaking point before someone asks, “How are you really doing?”

The 2026 Su***de Prevention Month message emphasizes prevention and connecting people to support before a situation becomes a crisis. This year, federal investments also include school-based trauma services and stronger family-support networks for caregivers raising children and youth with serious emotional or behavioral needs.

That is one reason community support matters.

Cornerstone works with youth, families, schools, providers, and community partners to help create a coordinated support system around each family.

Sometimes the First Step Is Simply Listening

Not every young person knows how to say, “I need help.”

Sometimes stress shows up as withdrawal, anger, changes in behavior, trouble at school, or simply not seeming like themselves. One of the most important things an adult can do is create space for an honest conversation.

Ask the question. Listen without rushing to fix everything. Remind them that asking for support is okay.

SAMHSA encourages adults to listen to young people’s concerns and notes that early conversations about mental health can help children and teens feel safer reaching out for support.

Su***de prevention is about more than responding during a crisis. It is also about surrounding children, youth, and families with support, connection, and resources before, during, and after difficult moments.

That’s why Wraparound Services matter. Wraparound brings together families, behavioral health providers, schools, community resources, and natural supports to build an individualized team around a young person and family.
