Cortana Kiwanis meets for breakfast every Thursday at 7:30 AM at the Piccadilly at 3332 S. Sherwood Forest Boulevard with a lively meeting and an interesting speaker. Our largest annual event is the Baton Rouge Christmas Parade, which is fully planned and organized by members of our club. We are probably best known for our "World Famous" Jambalaya mix, which we both sell and use to cook for charit

y events and school groups. We've also cooked it for Kiwanis District and International Conventions, and to aid victims of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans and tornadoes in Oklahoma. Other projects include preparing and delivering trauma dolls to area hospitals and first responders to assist with young patients, planting an Iris garden at the Iris Domestic Violence Center, answering phones at the Our Lady of the Lake Children's Hospital Radiothon and delivering food baskets to needy families at Thanksgiving and Christmas. We are a Model Club for Kiwanis International's EliMiNaTe Project, which seeks to eliminate Maternal & Neonatal Tetanus throughout the world through education, outreach and mass immunization drives. The current club commitment reflects a financial pledge to save 20,000 lives.

EPILEPSY ALLIANCE — ” WARRIOR WALK & 5K”

Cortana Kiwanis came through again with another day of fundraising for the Epilepsy Alliance "Warrior Walk and 5K" held at Pennington Biomedical Center Saturday, April 18.
Our team cooks, Jim Kaiser and Don MacGregor started at 7 AM and by 9 AM our serving team, Khaki Pittman, Laura Siu-Nguyen, Marc Pater, Keith McDavid, and Heather Folks-Givens served 230 clam shells for the participants and guests. The jambalaya was delicious and many at the event said Cortana's was the best of the 3 teams cooking jambalaya that day.

Marc Pater thanks all of our team for getting things ready and coming out early to help EAL's cause. Marc’s Granddaughter Haven (now 7) fights the battle of Epilepsy.

Five members went into our community and visited the Aquatic Germplasm and Genetic Resources Center (AGGRC) on the LSU campus, and it was incredibly inspiring. We discovered the amazing work they are doing to preserve species. We even got up close with an adorable axolotl! Thank you Nicholas Coxe for a great tour.

The group ended the adventure with fabalous lunch at Court to Table.

Thank you Marc for arranging our field trip!

Our Facebook elf may have been forgetful, but our members' dedication to serving the community shone through this holiday season. For Thanksgiving and Christmas, we proudly continued our tradition of providing food boxes to twenty-six families in need, distributing a total of 104 boxes of food. We love serving our community.

The Cortana Kiwanis Foundation presented a $2,400 grant to The Safety Place, with Danny Fields emphasizing the club’s long-standing commitment to serving children. Crystal Pichon expressed gratitude and shared that the organization is experiencing rapid growth, including the recent acquisition of a 19‑acre property with a building that will be renovated in partnership with BREC. The site will become a youth safety and wellness center featuring a community garden, outdoor sun‑safety spaces, and new indoor programs. Upcoming initiatives include home‑safety education and programming for older adults to support their health and engagement. The grant supports the first phase of a 10‑year plan, with larger developments expected in the future.

Throughout this holiday season, the Cortana elves have showcased their unwavering commitment. Tammy and Keith undertook a shopping adventure, purchasing $3,400 worth of toys for our club to donate to St Vincent de Paul. Following this, on a Thursday morning, Susie, Wanda, Keith, and Tammy teamed up with 15 Helix Mentorship STEAM Academy Key club members at St Vincent de Paul to help with gift wrapping. Moreover, on a Wednesday night, Pam and Heather contributed to the Big Buddy program, assisting the "Little Buddies" in choosing and wrapping gifts for their loved ones. Evidently, our elves have been extremely busy.
