Our exhibition openings bring together students, faculty, and community members to celebrate the scholarly and visual enactment of curation.

Stitches in Time: Quilts & Fashion opened on Sunday, May 3, to a standing room only crowd. Included in the exhibit are 15 quilts and approximately 40 fashion ensembles joined across time and varied purposes by the commonality of the quilting stitch.

This event was also special in that we celebrated the remarkable contributions of undergraduate student workers Martha Rigney and Olivia Ryland, both of whom graduated with degrees in apparel design and received the Student Service Award for their support of the museum. Special thanks to graduate students Morgan Strzynski, Mfon-Abasi Obong, and Sujun Liu, who helped bring the exhibit to life.

Exhibits such as this would not be possible without the financial contributions of our perpetually generous presenters, John G. Turner & Hango G. Fischer, and by our sponsors, Pat Alford, Lubna Culbert, and Mindy & Greg LaCour.

We are open M-F 11 am - 4 pm, and the first Sunday of each month from 2-4 pm. Make your plans to visit now; the exhibit is open until January 15, 2027.

Stitches in Time: Quilts & Fashion features more than 20 quilted garments from our Geoffrey Beene archive, established by Sylvia R. Karasu, MD. These fashions, including this remarkable quilted evening jacket, represent Mr. Beene’s ability to implement quilting as a means of impeccable craftsmanship and style.

These Beene fashions are part of a new group recently selected and donated by Dr. Karasu especially for this exhibition.

Join us this Sunday, May 3, for the grand opening from 2-4 pm!

Our Geoffrey Beene archive, thanks to the generosity of our gracious donor, Sylvia R. Karasu MD, continues to grow! Our next exhibition Stitches in Time: Quilts & Fashion, ncludes a newly acquired group of Beene garments donated by Dr. Karasu all of which feature quilting as a design technique.

Mr. Beene frequently used quilting in his work to add visual interest, to achieve structural support, and to improve wearability. This video clip features our curator, Dr. Michael Mamp, in conversation with the Costume Society of America President Leon Weibers during a recent webinar as he shares the Beene collection origin story.

Students in TAM 4072: History of Modern Fashion recently visited the LSU Textile & Costume Museum for an Artifact Day, where they examined historic dress and accessories from the mid-to-late nineteenth century.

With a fashion collection of approximately 10,000 artifacts spanning from 1767 to the present, the LSU Textile & Costume Museum is a powerful teaching resource, offering students hands-on opportunities to study fashion history.

Did you know that the Department of Textiles Apparel Design and Merchandising offers multiple courses in fashion history? This semester museum undergraduate student workers Martha and Olivia are both enrolled in TAM 4072: History of Modern Fashion which explores fashion as a product and cultural symbol from 1850 to the present day. A recent unit focused on Edwardian era fashion (1900-1910) which emphasized an S shape silhouette for women achieved via extreme corsetry. Objects from our collection help being these aesthetic concepts of silhouette and design to life for students in a tangible way.

Recently donated to the museum and featured in our current exhibition is this remarkable ensemble worn by the 2025 Queen of the Young Men Illinois Club , Ms. Ava Robertson The ensemble includes a gown by Yvonne Lafleur , with custom-made crown, jewels, scepter, and mantle.
