Dose of the Coast

Dose of the Coast Promoting well-being through coastal adventure for those impacted by life-altering illness Dose of the Coast was inspired by Donald Walker, Sr.

He was born on September 25, 1952 in Pensacola, Florida and grew up exploring all the Gulf coast had to offer - especially fishing, crabbing, floundering, and water skiing. He married a New Orleans native and raised three children there. He instilled his love for the coast in each one of them by taking them water skiing, fishing, and boating as often as possible. In 1969, when Don was 16, he shot

himself with a cannon he made in shop class. The injury was severe and required a blood transfusion. It was 29 years later that he learned the blood was contaminated with Hepatitis C. The virus eventually led to liver cancer and Don was given 30 days to live. He passed away on December 21, 2015, seven long years after his terminal diagnosis. The diagnosis was a tough blow to Don and the family, but those seven years were spent filled with adventures - including a drive along the Alaskan highway, trips up the East coast, and of course, local fishing trips. At Dose of the Coast we know better than anyone that hearts and funding can be tight when loved ones are ill. Our goal here is to lighten the burdens, lift the spirits, and put those adventures within reach!

Ms. Theresa is determined to squeeze every drop of adventure out of life after her diagnosis.

Today that bucket list adventure was a sail around Lake Pontchartrain with the New Orleans Yacht Experience. Theresa and her guests enjoyed the wind in their hair and standing on the bow soaking in the moment.

Thank you to New Orleans Yacht Experience and everyone who helps make experiences like this possible. Watching someone enjoy a day on the water never gets old.

Fair winds, Ms. Theresa. We can’t wait to see where your next adventure takes you!
