While checking in on nature preserves, our Louisiana staff members met up with some turtles: a Mississippi mud turtle (Kinosternon subrubrum hippocrepis) and a three-toed box turtle (Terrapene triunguis). 🐢 According to a local herpetologist, this was an older mud turtle due to the faded rings on its plastron, which wear down with age. And the plastron of the box turtle, similar to others in southwest Louisiana, had a pattern that indicates the species once overlapped with ornate box turtles (Terrapene ornata), now extirpated in Louisiana but common in the Great Plains.

It's ! We hope you will support The Nature Conservancy's critical work restoring habitat, planting trees and making our community a more resilient place for nature and people to thrive.

Your GiveNOLA Day donation helps us protect, preserve and restore the water, air and lands that provide for our way of life here and around the world. 🌍 Your contribution will support our critical work in Louisiana, including:

🌿Protecting more than 350,000 acres for habitat conservation in the state (through easements, land purchases and education of best land practices for landowners)
🌿Managing 18 nature preserves statewide, including the Abita Creek Flatwoods Preserve near Abita Springs and the Lafitte Woods Preserve in Grand Isle
🌿Constructing 10 miles of oyster reefs along the coast to slow erosion, provide habitat for fish and shellfish, and protect the shoreline from storms
🌿Continuing our restoration and environmental education program on Grand Isle.

💛 Our work would not be possible without YOU! Learn more at https://nature.ly/4dbHu3o

Members of the Louisiana Conservation Corps a program of American YouthWorks and TNC’s GulfCorps program spent time clearing underbrush and conducting boardwalk maintenance to keep the trails safe, accessible and welcoming for visitors at the Abita Creek Flatwoods Preserve. 🛠️ Their work helps protect both the habitat and the visitor experience, ensuring more people can get outside and enjoy Louisiana’s natural spaces. 🌳The Abita Creek Flatwoods Preserve protects one of the last remaining examples of longleaf pine flatwoods in St. Tammany Parish, a fire‑dependent ecosystem home to rare plants and diverse wildlife. 🔥 Keeping the boardwalks in good condition helps visitors experience this unique habitat without disturbing the sensitive groundcover that makes the preserve so special.
