Will you donate today? We are grateful for every dollar! Currently, we are working on obtaining approval for a grant to reconstruct the tomb of Captain Abraham Bird Sr., a Virginia Militia officer of the Revolutionary War. He is buried in a heavily damaged and deteriorated tomb that needs stabilizing and rebuilding of the structure. We are trying to demonstrate to the grantor our ability to raise funds which will match or exceed the grant. Another $1,000 will get us closer. Please go to www.hpcaebr.org to donate now!

Hollywood Plantation Cemeteries Association. Family Cemetery and Cemetery of the Enslaved. Background information about the cemetery and why repair and preservation is important. Benefits for the community. Make a tax-exempt donation.

Paul Bledsoe recently visited James Safford of Grosse Tete, Iberville Parish. James is the brother of Margaret Safford-Canella. They are descendants of Sidney Levert Sr. of St. Delphine Plantation at Brusly. Levert married Mary Bird, daughter of Abraham Thompson Bird (1824-1908), and granddaughter of Thompson Joseph Bird, son of Abraham Bird Sr. James Safford owns a family heirloom, said to have belonged to Abraham Thompson Bird (1824-1908). It is a hand-carved wooden to***co humidor, designed to hold loose to***co for pipe smoking or rolling ci******es. It is of the "Black Forest" style and carved from a single piece of Poplar. It was probably created between 1835 and 1860 in Switzerland. It may have been purchased in New Orleans as a gift to Abraham Thompson Bird.

We are excited to show you our commissioned artwork, created by Baton Rouge professional artist Betsy Neely. Betsy listened to our story and our vision for the future state of the Bird Cemetery. She even visited the cemetery with us! After weeks of sketching, scaling, discussion, and, with great patience on her part, Betsy was able to draw our mental vision of how the cemetery could look after repairs are completed. The result is amazing! We hope you agree. Compare it to the photo at the header of this page! The original painting is 16" x 20" and will be matted and framed and displayed at presentations, fundraisers, and other events.
If you would like to help us make this vision a reality, donate by visiting our website at HPCAEBR.ORG. You can send a check, use a credit card or PAY WITH Paypal.
