A bill moving through the Louisiana Legislature would create new, burdensome barriers for eligible citizens and lawfully present immigrants seeking healthcare coverage and food assistance.

Great story about determination....

When 14-year-old Xavier Jones lost his transportation to his 8th grade graduation ceremony, he had a choice. Skip the milestone moment with his Yeatman Middle School classmates, or find another way. Xavier chose determination. He laced up his shoes and walked 6.5 miles from his north St. Louis neighborhood to Harris-Stowe State University, bringing his brother and a friend along for the two-hour journey.

Xavier refused to let a transportation problem steal his moment. While other families arrived by car, he arrived on foot, tired but present for one of the most important days of his young academic life. His commitment to showing up, no matter the obstacle, was about to change everything. Sometimes the universe rewards those who refuse to give up.

When the university president learned about Xavier's incredible walk during the ceremony, he was moved to act immediately. Right there, he awarded Xavier a full scholarship and arranged transportation support for his future. What started as a potential missed graduation became a life-changing moment of recognition. Xavier's story spread across social media, with thousands of people inspired by his grit and celebrating how his determination opened doors he never expected. Effort that refuses to quit still gets noticed by the right people.

The move underscores a broader trend in Louisiana’s maternal health response: Lawmakers concede the severity of the problem, but efforts to enact meaningful systemic change repeatedly stall.
