🌿 Paddling with purpose on Bayou Sauvage!

This past Saturday, May 2nd, LaCC teamed up with for a free community kayaking event in the beautiful Bayou Sauvage Urban National Wildlife Refuge. We volunteered as paddle instructors, helping new kayakers and canoeists learn water safety and joined Refuge Ranger Giselle Aguilar in sharing the rich history of this unique New Orleans public land. From leading a short bayou tour to event setup and cleanup, our team was proud to help steward these local waters.

Huge thanks to USFWS for bringing people together to connect with nature – right in our urban backyard. 🌊🛶

“We’d like to extend a big thank you to the Louisiana Conservation Corps (LCC) and two of our LICI volunteers for their hard work at Palmetto Island State Park yesterday, Monday, February 23rd.

LICI’s volunteer team—Ed Wilhelm and Gary Salathe—joined forces with the LCC crew to work in the park’s boardwalk swamp, home to the Abbeville Red iris restoration project. Among other accomplishments, they wrapped up the day having planted over 350 Abbeville Red irises (I. nelsonii) into the swamp.

About a third of the irises planted came from a donation by Kent Benton, an expert in propagating these irises. Kent has generously contributed hundreds of his I. nelsonii to the park’s restoration project over the past two years.

The irises already established in the boardwalk swamp are looking especially robust, which means we’re on track for a spectacular bloom in April. If you’re traveling from outside the area to see them, consider planning your visit around the Stir the Pot / Abbeville Red Iris Bloom Event being held in the park on Saturday, April 11th—and make a full day of it!”
