✨Restoring habitats one pond at a time!✨
Our summer Gulf Corps team helping The Nature Conservancy restore a portion of their property known as a Flatwoods Pond, a type of habitat that is often found embedded within longleaf pine savannahs. 🌿
Flatwoods Pond habitats are typically flooded throughout most of the year and host a variety of different grass and wildflower species. The team has been working to remove specific species of trees, like the invasive Chinese tallow, to open up the pond. 🌾🌼
⚡Interesting fact! Historically this process would be done when lightning strikes causing fire to spread throughout the area, ensuring the pond stayed open and free of tree cover!
