The Data Didn’t Discover the Problem. It Confirmed What Residents Already Knew.

For generations, residents of Alsen and St. Irma Lee have observed changes in their air, land, health, and quality of life. Those observations matter. When the same concerns are raised across families, fenceline communities, and generations, they carry context that formal systems can miss. They remember what existed before industry tainted their environment, how the land was used, when health concerns became more common, and what it means to live with multiple sources of pollution over time.

Research in Alsen reinforces an important lesson: Community knowledge and scientific evidence does Not have to compete.

They can strengthen each other. Researchers have used pollution records, facility locations, population information, and health-risk data to better understand what residents experience.

Lived experience does not replace science. It helps us ask whether the official record tells the whole story. If environmental decisions only consider what can be measured at one facility, during one reporting period, we risk missing what families experience cumulatively across decades.

Communities should not have to prove their suffering before the powers that be decide their experiences matter.
