We are parents, advocates, teachers, scientists who organically came together during the summer of 2021 as a direct response to the lack of leadership around covid-19 protocols in our k-12 schools in the state of Louisiana.

The health and safety of Louisiana schools is now at risk by a bill up for consideration in the Louisiana legislature. We are joining Louisiana Families for Vaccines to OPPOSE bad public health policies like HB47 that put our schools, kids, teachers, and other school employees at risk. Almost 6,000 new cases reported today. Nearly 3,000 people hospitalized, 91% unvaccinated. Almost 12,000 total deaths from covid19 in Louisiana.

The majority of cases from Aug. 12-18 are in kids 5-17 years old. We MUST do more to keep kids and schools safe!

The Louisiana Department of Health reports 5,922 cases reported to the state since August 19, 2021.

The vast majority (98.4%) of these cases are tied to COVID spreading in communities, rather than congregate settings like nursing homes.

2,999 individuals are hospitalized with COVID across Louisiana.

This update represents increases across all regions and age groups.

Sadly, we also report 67 COVID deaths reported to the state since yesterday.

A plea from oncologist Jonathan Mizrahi, MD:

"Please, please, please get your COVID-19 vaccine. If protecting yourself isn't incentive enough, please do it for my two children who are too young to receive the vaccine or my immune-compromised patients receiving chemotherapy."

EBR is doing more to keep schools safe by requiring all school staff to show proof of vaccination against covid19 and submit to weekly screening for covid19.

Simple public health measures such as vaccination, masking, testing surveillance, and distancing can help reduce the spread of covid19 and we love to see schools using more of those methods to keep kids and communities safe and healthy!

What is your school district doing to mitigate covid19? Ask that they do more by signing the petition: www.change.org/SafeSchoolsLA

The health and safety of our children when they attend school in-person is paramount. However, Louisiana kids, parents, teachers, and school staff are being left vulnerable during Louisiana’s 4th wave of COVID-19. We are asking Louisiana State Superintendent of Education, Dr. Cade Brumley and members of the Louisiana State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE) to be consistent with CDC and the American Academy of Pediatrics’ recommendations to ensure a safe school year for our children.
