In the wild, harbor seals are solitary animals. While they do not form long-term social relationships or seek out companionship, they do come together to mate and share prime haul out areas.

When pups need to come in for care, they don't have the luxury of private enclosures, so they are grouped by size and personality-not all pups get along! These two pups, however, have been together since admit and are getting along just fine 🥹 When released, they likely will not stay together or seek others for companionship, but while here and recovering it sometimes helps to have a rehab buddy!

Our marine mammal and sea turtle stranding hotline often hears the word "just". By the end of the day, one seal on the beach is often disturbed and its critical rest interrupted numerous times for "just a brief moment"-even if you're the only one on the beach at the time.

To help marine mammals on shore, please stay at least 150 feet away, even if it appears sick or injured, help keep others away, and report it! In Maine, call 1-800-532-9551.

Meet our most-improved harbor seal pup patient! When she arrived at our center last month at 5 days old, she had already gone through more than we can imagine.

She was found in Pembroke, Maine by the Canadian border, abandoned, injured and lethargic. The Whale at the College of the Atlantic response team scooped her up for rehab at our center. To get to us, she needed to travel over 200 miles. Being too sick to immediately survive the long transport, she was overnighted for supportive care with Allied Whale, and made the trip down to us the following day.

While we don't know what facial trauma she endured, we are thrilled that it only impacted soft tissue and her jaw and most teeth are intact. With wound care, medications, and very careful nutrtion, she is feeling and looking much better. This week she quickly mastered eating fish, learning to eat around the healing wound. We are so happy for her!

Our hospital is full of harbor seal pups from all over Maine! In the wild, these pups would be nursing from their mom, relying on her for nutrition, hydration, and immune system development. When they come into rehab, they need feedings 5-6 times every 24 hours until weaned. Right now, our team is providing over 80 feeds daily for patients 😳

What do we feed them? Over many years we've been trialing and perfecting formula. It is carefully fomulated to meet the specialized needs of growing pups, maximizing fat content and balancing vitamins, nutrients, and GI support. While we have spent countless hours thoughtfully supporting the unique needs of fragile pups, we will likely always be evolving their formula as we learn more.

How do we feed them? The safest, fastest, and most effective way to feed seal pups is by tube-feeding. A tube is placed from their mouth to their stomach and the liquid is poured into a funnel, delivering nutrition, hydration, medications, and supplements directly to their stomach. While this may seem uncomfortable and difficult, the pups eagerly swallow the tube and it takes less than 1 minute to do. Here, two teams are working through all of the pup tubings during one scheduled feed!

Harbor seal pup season is all-consuming for our team due to the amount of time, resources, and work it requires. As a result, our center turns into a harbor pup-focused hospital. But when this harp seal stranded in dire shape at the beginning of pup season, we couldn't leave her out there.

She went from severely dehydrated with bloodwork values that were quite literally off the charts, to a whole different seal-strong, spunky, and healthy! She was cleared for release last week and she couldn't get to the water fast enough. Here she is sprinting back to the wild 🌊
