Mike was a long time member of Bath and a strong advocate for our union before retiring from Bath. Our deepest sympathies to his family and friends.

It is with a heavy heart and profound sadness that the West Bath Fire Department announces the loss of a longtime member and officer. For decades, Mike Drake served as a member, holding many ranks throughout his time here. He was best known for his passion for training firefighters, not only training members of the West Bath Fire Department but also members of countless area departments and nationally at FDIC. He will forever be missed, leaving a hole that will never be filled, but his legacy of service to the Town of West Bath and surrounding communities will never be forgotten.

FACTS: Firefighter Starting Pay in Our Area
• Bath: $26.75/hr
• Brunswick: $23.93/hr
• Freeport: $23.50/hr
• Topsham: $25.20/hr
• BIW: $19.89/hr

🚨 BIW is the only fire department in the region stuck on a 3-platoon 24/48 schedule—not because we want it, but because we’ve lost so many firefighters that we can barely cover the minimum level of service.

💰 For comparison, an entry level General Laborer at BIW starts at $25.73–$26.78/hr.

🔥 To even apply as a BIW Firefighter/EMT, you need multiple certifications, training, and experience. Yet the pay is less than someone hired off the street for an entry-level job.

Firefighters deserve equal pay. Equal benefits. Safe staffing. Period.

Bath firefighters have been paying out of pocket for these test if the insurance company doesn’t cover the specific test or if the insurance deems it’s not necessary based on their age.

Health insurance doesn't cover preventative cancer screenings for firefighters and most municipalities don't pay for it either.

The total combined Fire and EMS calls for January are 225. 185 were ambulance calls.

Of those ambulance calls, 36 times we had two ambulances out at the same time and six times we had three or more ambulance responses at the same time.

Every day in January the Bath Fire and Rescue Department was staffed with at least five fire and EMS personnel, thanks to a joint labor and management effort to increase minimum staffing.
