A night of trivia. A part in changing history.

At the recent Rotary Zones Institute in Cancun, Mike McGovern shared this remarkable image and the story behind it. Decades ago, Rotary began its fight against polio in the Philippines. The child pictured receiving the vaccine was among the first children reached through that effort. Today, that child is a grown man (pictured on the right)—a powerful reminder of what happens when Rotarians decide that something seemingly impossible is worth doing.

Since then, Rotary and its partners have helped immunize billions of children. But as Mike reminded us, the work isn’t finished. Ending polio takes all of us—clubs, Rotarians, communities, and people willing to support the effort.

That’s why the Rotary Club of Batavia Trivia Night on October 10 is about more than a fun evening together. Proceeds will support End Polio Now and Rotary’s continuing commitment to a polio-free world.

Come test your knowledge, gather your team, have some fun—and help us get one step closer to making polio only a memory.

🇺🇸 Your Vote. Your Voice.

Today is National Voter Registration Day, making the timing of this morning’s Rotary program especially meaningful.

We were pleased to welcome Patty Lackman of the League of Women Voters Central Kane County, who shared how the League works year-round to strengthen voter education, registration, and participation. Patty reminded us that the League is nonpartisan—it does not support or oppose candidates or political parties—and focuses on helping people become informed and engaged voters.

One resource Patty highlighted was VOTE411.org, the League of Women Voters’ nonpartisan voter information resource. Beginning September 24, local voters can enter their address to view their ballot, see which candidates are running in their districts, and review candidates’ responses to League questionnaires—all in one place.

Patty headed directly from our meeting to Oswego East High School, where the League expected to register more than 100 students during lunch as part of National Voter Registration Day. What a fitting example of civic engagement in action.

Whatever your political perspective, today is a good day to make sure you're ready to participate: check your voter registration, learn who and what will be on your ballot, become informed, and make your voice heard.

Thank you, Patty, for sharing your passion for civic participation with the Rotary Club of Batavia and for the work you and the League of Women Voters do throughout our communities.

Service Above Self includes being an informed and engaged member of our community.

Twenty-five years later, the memories remain. At this week’s Rotary Club of Batavia meeting, our members spent time sharing their personal memories of September 11, 2001.

A guest of one of our members remembered working just blocks from the World Trade Center—the smoke, the loss of phone service, walking across the Brooklyn Bridge, and strangers offering water to people trying to make their way home.

Another remembered being in Bahrain and witnessing very different reactions to what was happening in America.

We heard about a mother desperately trying to reach Boston for a memorial service for her son, a flight crew member lost that day. We also heard the remarkable story of a man who overslept, missed his flight from Newark, and thought his day was ruined—until he learned that the flight he missed had gone down in Pennsylvania.

Members shared memories of loved ones in New York, first responders, uncertainty, fear, and the countless ways people reached out to help complete strangers.

These weren't stories from a history book. They were memories carried for 25 years by people sitting together around our Rotary tables. As a new generation grows up without firsthand memories of September 11, sharing these stories matters.

Today, we remember the lives lost, the families forever changed, the courage of first responders, and the extraordinary acts of kindness that emerged from an unimaginable day.

One member also reminded us of something worth carrying forward: the remarkable unity our country experienced in the days that followed.

May we never forget—and may remembrance inspire us to choose compassion, service, and care for one another.

Stories of Impact: When Your Gifts Become Service

What happens when the work you’re good at becomes a way to change someone else’s life?

Last week, the Rotary Club of Batavia welcomed Dr. Tracy Williams, whose remarkable career as a low-vision specialist has included more than 40,000 patient visits, work with thousands of students, and decades of service helping people with vision loss discover what is still possible.

His career has also taken him places his younger self could hardly have imagined—including serving as an eye doctor for the Chicago White Sox and Bulls. But perhaps the most powerful part of his message had little to do with professional accomplishments.

“Everybody has a gift.”

For Dr. Williams, the real impact comes from using those gifts to help others. His philosophy is simple: people should never be defined by vision loss. With the right tools, technology, coaching, and encouragement, possibilities can reopen.

Rotary is built on that same idea—that our talents, professions, connections, and experiences can become instruments of service.

Dr. Williams also shared that Rotary runs deep in his family. His father was a devoted Rotarian and district governor who traveled to Africa to help distribute polio vaccines—another reminder of what can happen when people decide to put service into action.

Thank you, Dr. Williams, for sharing your story and reminding us that impact often begins by asking how the gifts we already have might serve someone else.
