Fellow Batavians,

We are so appreciative of your support and commitment to our schools, students, teachers and community. Although the final referendum votes have not been fully counted, the outcome is not what any of us wanted nor what our children deserve.

Great news is the district has a new Superintendent and three new, educator-endorsed board members, whose terms begin May 2023. They will certainly develop a plan to address the issues and offer solutions with our schools and they will need your continued input and support.

Shaunak and Shilpa believe an investment in education is an investment in kids, both now and in the future, and the best way to help yourself is to help others. Kids deserve improved, modernized and quality schools.

They paid attention to the benefits and ignored the misinformation and their own individual interests as empty nesters. A great school district is the number one reason for Batavia’s growth and success. That means it increases their home value and attracts new families and businesses. 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲, 𝗘𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗡𝗲𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗿𝘆: Bonds up to $140 million will be issued in batches over 5 years so the taxes collected for the annual debt repayment remains level, which means $0 tax increase for the school district’s portion of property taxes collected.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘂𝗺 𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 in November 2022 and again on April 4th 𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘁 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗺𝗮𝘇𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗷𝗼𝗯 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝟭𝟱 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗠𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗙𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻 2023-2038, which would be funded when the referendum passes.

For example, the district deferred important maintenance capital projects during the Great Recession to avoid laying off 100 teachers and recently re-established its financial strength.

𝗕𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝘅𝘁
𝟮𝟬𝟬𝟴-𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁. 10-12 years of improving its financial strength since the Great Recession.
𝟮𝟬𝟭𝟳-𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟭. 4 years of compiling, analyzing and reviewing 100’s of data points and critical factors like educational, financial, functional, environmental, operational, safety and security compared to current operations.
𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟮. 1 year of surveying and listening to residents then made the recommendation based on community feedback to propose the referendum question in Nov and again on April 4, 2023.

𝗛𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆
The last successful referendum was in 2007, which makes this the longest timespan without major construction or renovation of Batavia schools since 1995.

The Board of Education is seeking permission from voters to issue up to $140 million in school construction and renovation bonds on the April 4, 2023, ballot.

𝗚𝗲𝘁 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝘃𝗼𝘁𝗲 𝗬𝗘𝗦! Two long-time Batavians since 2001 and new local business owners, Juliana and Silvia, made their voices heard today!

Juliana and her sister went to RMS and BHS and soon Juliana’s daughter will be a 4th generation BPS101 kid. Juliana and Silvia want a way for students today and in the future to have a voice in their schools! Our kids, our town just want better schools! All kids deserve that!

And, quality schools attract families and businesses.
