Bastrop Juneteenth Celebration

Bastrop Juneteenth Celebration The Bastrop Juneteenth Celebration is held the third weekend in June each year News was slow to get to Texas but we have been celebrating every since.

The Bastrop Juneteenth Committee has been helping the greater Bastrop area to commemorate, celebrate and enjoy the Juneteenth holiday. Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day is an annual holiday in 14 states. Originating in Texas, it commemorates the day freedom was proclaimed to all slaves in Texas by Union General Gordon Granger on June 19, 1865 in Galveston, Texas. This occur

ed almost two years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863. The Bastrop Juneteenth Committee's goals are to further educate the community about this great day and its history. Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021. The US Senate and House of Representatives passed resolutions to make this happen. President Joe Biden signed the Proclamation into law for the holiday

We lost a long time member of our community, Mrs. Ruby Thomas Johnson. Mrs. Ruby was my childhood neighbor on the hill and a very close family friend. She was the person you loved to be around and I enjoyed her delicious meals complete with her special peach cobbler and okra and black-eyed pea gumbo with cornbread and sweet tea.

I was happy to have nominated and honored her as an “Unsung Hero” last year with the Bastrop County African American Cultural Center and Freedom Colonies Museum.

She truly was a treasured member of our community and a longtime faithful member of the Paul Quinn African Methodist Episcopal Church where you could always see her at her post as an usher and cheerful greeter.

Rest in Peace and Prosperity in Heaven!
You have definitely earned your wings and I’m sure you’re flying high and spreading much joy as you reunite with your beloved family and friends. 🙏🏾😢🙏🏾😢🙏🏾❤️🙏🏾😢🙏🏾😢🙏🏾
