4-H FLORAL DESIGN CONTEST
Contest Date & Location: This contest will be held on Friday, January 30, 2026. Judging will take place at the Washington County Fairgrounds. Check-in will be from 6:00-6:29pm. Judging will start at 6:30pm.

Contest Cost: $10.00 per 4-H member to help cover the cost of the flowers and foliage.
Age Divisions:
Cloverbuds: K – 2nd grade
Junior Division: 3rd – 7th grade
Senior Division: 8th – 12th grade
ALL contestants MUST be current 2025-2026 County 4-H members.
Rules of Play
• Individual in-person contest.
• Contest Fee, $10.00 per 4-H member to help cover the cost of the flowers and foliage.
• Projects must be built by the 4-H members. No outside help will be permitted.
• Participants will have 25 minutes to create their design and clean up the workspace.
• Contestants will be working with real flowers and foliage.
• Placings will be based on rankings of teams by judges. Judges’ decisions are final. 1st, 2nd and 3rd placings will be awarded.
• No pre-made items will be allowed.
During the Contest
• The items you bring for the contest will be checked by contest facilitators.
• Each participant will be assigned a preparation station. Only contest participants are allowed in this area.
• No coaching will be allowed during contest.
• Judges will observe preparation to assist in determining scores.
• Each contestant will have 25 minutes to decorate their floral design, prepare their presentation and clean up the preparation area.
• Contestant will receive 2 secret items.
• Each of the secret items must be used in the display. However, the entire amount of the secret item provided does not have to be used, only a portion.
• There will be a “Flower Shop” that participants can use to enhance their floral design.
• Each participant must provide their own container in which the floral design will be created in.
• Each participant must provide their own tools and equipment. Suggested tools include wire cutters, florist knife, scissors and pruning shears. Other equipment possibly needed includes floral foam, floral tape, and floral wire. Note cards can be used for presentation preparation.
• Contestants are encouraged to bring their own table covering for preparation. But table coverings are not required.
• Electricity will not be available at the contest.
Clean-up
• Participants must clean up their preparation areas.
• Clean-up time is included in the 25-minute preparation allotment.
• Leftover plants should be returned to the “Flower Shop”.
• Each participant should bring their own cleaning supplies.
Presentation
• Participants are allowed to bring their presentation scripts with them.
• When time is called, each participant will present their floral design to the judge(s). There is a time limit of 4 minutes for presentation. Participants should provide the following information:
o Introduction
o Creative Name of the display
o List of tools and supplies used
o List flowers and foliage used in the display.
• The judge(s) may ask questions.
• Once time is called, all participants must step away from their workspace. No notes can be added to their presentation once time is called.
