For those who have never worked a police K9, it’s difficult to understand the bond between a handler and their partner. Handlers often spend more time with their K9 than they do with their own families. They work together every shift, train together for countless hours, and face challenges side by side. Through it all, these remarkable dogs ask for nothing more than the opportunity to work and the chance to please their handler.

Then, what feels like only a short time later, comes the day every handler dreads; the day they must say goodbye to the most loyal and dedicated partner they have ever known.

K9 Duke or “The Dukester” was no exception.

Duke was an extraordinary police dog with a work ethic that was second to none. Throughout the Bartlesville community, he was easily recognized by his signature mohawk and admired for his unwavering drive. Duke was so dependable and eager to work that many of our now-seasoned K9 handlers began their careers alongside him. During his years of service, Duke played a vital role in removing countless kilograms of illegal narcotics from the streets of Bartlesville and helped make our community a safer place.

It is with profound sadness that we say farewell to K9 Duke.

This morning, Duke crossed the Rainbow Bridge surrounded by his loving owner, Deputy Chief Newell, and his family. At nearly 15 years old, Duke lived a long life filled with purpose, dedication, and unconditional love.

Thank you, Duke, for your faithful service, your unwavering loyalty, and the countless lives you touched throughout your career.

You have earned your rest.

Run free, Duke. We will take it from here.

This is an exciting announcement!

We have some big changes taking place in the K9 unit and will try to keep everyone updated on those changes. One of those being the addition of K9 Havoc. Havoc is a 2 year old Belgian Malinois imported from Hungary. Havoc will serve as a dual purpose K9 assisting patrol and eventually our Special Operations Team. Our goal is to keep Havoc safe, so that he can assist in keeping you safe. Brady’s K9 Fund have helped vest our furry partners/friends in the past and we are extremely grateful to have their support. If you wish to take part in that support please click the link. Huge thank you to all of supporters and citizens who are consistently showing us love and support.

🚔 Congratulations to the 2026 Citizens Police Academy Graduates! 🎓

After 8 incredible weeks, our 2026 Citizens Police Academy participants officially crossed the finish line and what a journey it has been!

Over the course of the academy, participants got an exclusive, behind-the-scenes look at the work our officers do every day to serve and protect the Bartlesville community. From law enforcement driver training, defensive tactics, and fi****ms training, to behind-the-scenes looks at criminal investigations, our Special Operations Team, and so much more, this program provided a firsthand experience into the training, teamwork, and dedication required in modern policing.

The Citizens Police Academy is about more than learning police work, it’s about building relationships, increasing transparency, and strengthening the partnership between the Bartlesville Police Department and the community we proudly serve.

Thank you all for dedicating your time over the last 8 weeks, asking thoughtful questions, and fully immersing yourselves in this experience. We appreciate your commitment to learning more about the men and women behind the badge and the work that often happens behind the scenes.

We hope you leave with lasting memories, new friendships, and a greater understanding of the profession. We already look forward to welcoming the next group of citizens to participate in the next Citizens Police Academy!

Andrew Ward named Bartlesville police chief

From CityBeat newsletter of City of Bartlesville GOV:
Bartlesville Police Department Deputy Chief Andrew Ward has been selected to take over the role of police chief, Assistant City Manager Laura Sanders said Tuesday.

Ward, who was offered the position following an internal application process that closed last month, will officially become Bartlesville police chief on July 2, following the retirement of Chief Kevin Ickleberry.

"Deputy Chief Ward has the full confidence of both the City administration team and the men and women of the Bartlesville Police Department," said Assistant City Manager Laura Sanders. "Throughout this process, it was clear that not only is he prepared to lead, he is deeply committed to doing so with integrity, transparency, and dedication.

"In an effort to ensure a fair and thorough internal application process, we engaged independent subject matter experts to support our evaluation. Without hesitation, both affirmed that Deputy Chief Ward is the right choice to guide the future of public safety in Bartlesville. Their conclusions aligned with what we have consistently observed: a thoughtful, principled leader who approaches every decision with integrity and intention."

Ward began his career in law enforcement with the Kay County Detention Center in 2010 and the Blackwell Police Department in 2011. He joined the Bartlesville Police Department in 2012, where he served as a K-9 officer from 2012 to 2022. He earned the ranks of corporal in 2018 and sergeant in 2020. He was named captain in 2022 and was promoted to deputy chief in 2024. He has served in Operations, Patrol, and the Investigation divisions of the department.

Ward holds degrees in Criminal Justice Administration and has earned several certifications in advanced law enforcement and leadership training, including the Oklahoma Municipal Assurance Group New Chief's Training School and the Southern Police Institute Administrative Officer's Course.

Other accomplishments include:

BPD Officer of the Year 2013
BPD Lifesaving Award 2016
Crime Stoppers Officer of the Year 2016
Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics Directors Award 2021
Oklahoma Association Chiefs of Police Award of Commendation 2022
Leadership Bartlesville Class 34
Young Professionals of Bartlesville Emerging Stars Under 40

Ward will continue in his role of deputy chief pending Ickleberry's retirement in July. Ickleberry has been on personal leave due to a medical issue since December 2025. Deputy Chief Troy Newell has served as Acting Chief in his absence. Newell, who announced in March he would not seek the chief position, will continue as acting chief until Ickleberry's retirement.

"I have had the privilege of working alongside D.C. Ward for many years, and I can say without hesitation that he is exceptionally well-qualified to lead the Bartlesville Police Department," Newell said. "He approaches every decision with thoughtfulness and professionalism and always strives to do what is right rather than what is easy or popular. This has earned him the respect and trust of both his peers and the community he serves. He is one of the finest individuals I know, and I look forward to serving under his leadership."

"Deputy Chief Ward steps into this role with genuine enthusiasm and a clear vision for strengthening relationships both inside the department and throughout the community," said Sanders. "We are confident he will lead with professionalism, accountability, and a strong commitment to serving the people of Bartlesville."
