The Voice of the Martyrs - USA

The Voice of the Martyrs - USA Serving persecuted Christians in the world's most difficult and dangerous places to follow Christ. His wife, Sabina, was imprisoned for three years.

VOM was founded in 1967 by Pastor Richard Wurmbrand, who was imprisoned in Communist Romania for 14 years for his faith in Christ. In the 60s, Richard, Sabina, and their son, Mihai, were ransomed out of Romania and came to the United States. Through their travels, the Wurmbrands spread the message of the atrocities that Christians face in restricted nations, while establishing a network of offices

dedicated to assisting the persecuted church. The Voice of the Martyrs continues in this mission around the world today through the following main purposes:

1. To encourage and empower Christians to fulfill the Great Commission in areas of the world where they are persecuted for their involvement in propagating the gospel of Jesus Christ. We accomplish this by providing Bibles, literature, radio broadcasts, medical assistance, and other forms of aid.

2. To give relief to the families of Christian martyrs in these areas of the world.

3. To equip local Christians to love and win to Christ their enemies who are opposed to the gospel in countries where believers are actively persecuted for their Christian witness.

4. To undertake projects of encouragement, helping believers rebuild their lives and Christian witness in countries that have formerly suffered Communist oppression.

5. To emphasize the fellowship of all believers by informing the world of atrocities committed against Christians and by remembering their courage and faith.

A call to accelerate prayer globally and strategically. A prayer that strongholds would be broken down and that the gaps where the Gospel doesn’t exist would be filled.

Thongkham Philavanh first suffered for his faith in Christ in 2001. As a new disciple, he was thrilled to travel from his home in Laos to Thailand for a Bible training seminar. He was equally excited to see the Bible, pamphlets and sermon audiocassettes that he was free to take. He thought about the other Christians in his hometown in northern Loas and how blessed they would be to receive these materials, so he filled his bag and headed home. Hours later, he and his travel companions were stopped by Laotian soldiers. Accused of leading the people astray from the traditional animist religions, the eight young men were arrested and imprisoned — without a chance to get word to the loved ones waiting for them at home. They were in prison for three months.

After his wife, Miriam, was attacked with acid by assailants trying to stop their gospel ministry, Andre transported her to multiple hospitals in a desperate effort to save her. As they traveled by ambulance, Andre said the Lord spoke to him. “The Holy Spirit was telling me when we were in the ambulance that my wife was going home,” he said. “The Holy Spirit told me to sing a song. I was singing, and then, when there were too many tears, I would stop. And then when I find myself again, I would resume and sing again. … I was saying goodbye to her like that. Because the song was a song that speaks about the love of God for me, what the Lord did for me.”

On the day Perpetua was to be executed for her Christian faith, she went with joy to the coliseum. Learn more about her story in this short video from The Voice of the Martyrs.
Perpetua was part of a small fellowship of new Christians in the ancient Roman city of Carthage, located in what is now Tunisia. On March 7, A.D. 203, Perpetua and other Christians were led into Carthage’s coliseum and killed in front of a bloodthirsty crowd of spectators because they refused to give up their faith in Christ. The killing of Perpetua and others inspired the church to thrive in Carthage and many to follow Christ — at any cost.
