Honoring the Legacy of Mother Viola Fletcher
Today, we pause with deep reverence to honor the life and legacy of Mother Viola Fletcher, a beloved survivor of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre and a global symbol of resilience, truth-telling, and justice.
Mother Fletcher lived through one of the darkest chapters in our city’s history, yet she carried herself with unmatched dignity and unwavering courage. She spent her life reminding the world of what happened on Greenwood, not in bitterness, but in conviction. Not in despair, but in hope. Her voice became a bridge between generations, calling us to remember, to reckon, and to rebuild.
At 1256 Movement, we stand on the shoulders of pioneers like Mother Fletcher. Her story is woven into the very foundation of the work we do, preserving history, empowering community, and pursuing a future worthy of those who came before us.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, loved ones, and to every heart in Greenwood and beyond who feels this loss. May her memory continue to light the path toward justice, unity, and restoration.
Rest in power, Mother Fletcher.
Your legacy will never be forgotten.
Your courage will forever guide us.
