Jared Burke Foundation "Turning Outdoor Adventures into Lifetime Memories" The story starts on the opening day of Shotgun Season - November 19, 1999. Please, don't let this be real!

The day started out as many other hunting trips waking up in the tent and getting ready for the hunt. The exception on this day was that Jared had strategically placed the alarm within a few inches of my ear rendering a special acrobatic wake-up, to say the least. Jared, Kyle Delahunt and I arrived at the hunting ground near Teal Pond in Pope County and readied our guns only to have Jared's gun di

scharge. I asked him what on Earth he was thinking and he stated that it just fired and he may have had his finger on the trigger. I told him he was to put it away and we would have to revisit the problem with the gun later in the morning. Jared being the typical teenager (16 years old) begged and promised not to have a round chambered or the gun on fire until a deer was in site and it was in a safe direction. That is when I made the most horrible, idiotic and life altering decision of my entire life - I let him take the gun. Sometime around 7:45 AM, I heard a shot within a 100 yard radius of my location. I never though anything of it because the neighbors usually hunted on the property line and I was near to that area. Around 9:00 AM I headed to the truck with Kyle and waited on Jared. When he didn't return, I became concerned and employed the help of Clyde Nolte and his wife, to aid in the search. When we had exhausted all of our efforts, I extended the search to the Pope County Sheriff and the Southern Illinois Search and Rescue Team, where e engaged the search for another 12-14 hours. During this time Don Lager had arrived to visit us camping and he aided in the search committee. The Sheriff came to me at approximately 4:00 AM and said they had found Jared and he was dead. It was like my world came crashing down and my body lost all ability to control itself. How could I even begin to comprehend the decision I made would lead to such a massive mistake. How could this happen, only two years after saying goodbye to my Father, John Burke? How could I even begin to go back home with this shame on my head? What do I have to do to wake up from this, the most horrible dream I have ever had. The two hour ride home was the worst time in my life because I was heading home to tell my mother that her youngest son had been killed. Only seeing the reaction of my Mother, Sharon; Sister Shannon and Grandma Bea was harder than hearing the news from the Sheriff. A piece of me died that day out in the woods of Pope County, a piece that can never be replaced. Watching you walk away from me that morning, assuring me you would be fine, is a memory to that plays over and over in my head like a song that you just can't seem to shake. So began my mission to talk to as many people that would listen, starting with the hunter safety courses. That mission now continues with the organization of my family and friends and into The Jared Burke Foundation

Well we rounded off the JBF Turkey Season with Lenny Schwarze and this nice bird! We went 9 for 10 this year out in the turkey woods from early youth season through the end of the Illinois and Missouri Spring seasons.
Lenny and John Burke went out to Dave Mahlandt’s property for 5th season and got the job done.
The birds in late season were not very vocal as they rumbled on the roost early, but when they hit the ground silence ensued!
It took us two days to get this guy in and he tucked under us in a tower blind. We just watched two longbeards skirt us about 75 yds out with a few hens. We were concentrating on those two and had them rip back at us a few times when Lenny leaned forward in the tower and said, “What about that one?”, pointing down in front of the blind. “Is it a hen?” we asked (not seeing it) and Lenny says, “It has a beard!”
I bearly got the camera up when he shot this guy at about 15-20 yds! All three of us got a good laugh out of it because this big boy rolled in silent.
Hats off to all those folks out there that support us and continue to help us with these lifetime adventures! Special thanks to Dave Mahlandt, who gets us out each year to take a bird and Alex Kalmer for nominating Lenny. Lenny had a heart transplant several years ago and wasn’t able to get out like he had in his younger years.
Thanks to all who help us make a difference in lives!
God Bless!

Every year we are lucky enough to do a First Responders Turkey Hunt at Torstenson Lodge. The Lodge is situated on the Torstenson Youth Conservation Education Center (TYCEC) grounds. Illinois Conservation Foundation (ICF) operates this beautiful 700+ acre property that was donated by the Torstenson Family to the Foundation to promote conservation education. The rustic “log cabin” lodge is 12,000 SF and nestled along a lake in close proximity to the Pecatonica River.
This year we had Joel Beer (Germantown Fire Department) and Travis Trame (Santa Fe Fire Protection District) on the hunt. Maddox Beer and Luke Trame were along to help cheer their dad’s on as they hunted these smart birds.
Scott Rakers and John Burke arrived a day before the hunters and scouted the birds. They set up some ground blinds close to where they thought the birds were roosting in the evenings. Mike Polhamus, who maintains this place for ICF, help us figure out the best locations given he lives on the property.
We struck out in the early morning to get set up. Scott had Travis and Luke with him and John had Joel and Maddox. Both groups set up in their respective locations and
Listened as the world came to life with the birds calling out their songs. The songbirds started it off followed by the canadian geese announcing their presence. Then a sound not often heard near home…..a Sandhill Crane broke its silence with its raspy call! Moments later the sounds of the thunder chicken ripped through the twilight turning silence into nervous anticipation.
Scott, Travis and Luke set up in view of the lodge where we knew some Toms were roosted. The birds did as they seem to do and walked out into the field where they couldn’t get a good shot. They hung tight and were working another Tom and some hens hung up a 100 yds out when Luke looked out to the right and said, “Here comes one!” To Scott and Travis’s amusement, Travis set up and shot the bird…..one down!
John, Joel and Maddox had walked underneath a roosting hen on the way to the blind and had a gobbler within 50 yards. He definitely saw John set out the lone hen decoy.
The birds came off of roost and did as expected, flew away from us. After some patience and light calling we had a chance at a Tom that didn’t pan out. We moved across the property to another blind only to come back to the scene of the crime after Mike seen two longbeards headed towards the blind. We got back there just in time for John to hit a couple purrs and here they come. Boom! Bird down!
The excitement was a welcomed prize for the work put in and to have their boys along added to the experience!
After all this great stuff we took the boys over to Mike’s other place and let them fish into the afternoon.
What a great three days we spent with these heroes who run into the
face of danger when most are running away from it. These First Responders see things on an ongoing basis that haunt their thoughts and memories forever. God Bless them and all of you who help support JBF and give these folks a welcomed rest from the dangers they face in a moments notice!
Thanks to Mike Polhamus (TYCEC), Jenny Vaughn (ICF Executive Director) and all the folks at ICF who helps us throughout each year. Our partneship is one we treasure at JBF!
God bless!
