Yesterday, our Foster Care, Adoptions, and Kinship teams came together for an in-person meeting! πŸ’™ After taking care of the important discussions, they made time to relax, got creative with some painting, played games, and put together puzzles.

What a wonderful way to spend a Mondayβ€”connecting, collaborating, and enjoying some well-deserved fun together! 🎨🧩✨

πŸ’™ "I'm Raising a Child I Didn't Give Birth To β€” How Do I Talk About Their Parents?" πŸ’™

It's one of the most common questions foster and kinship caregivers ask: What do I say when my child asks about their mom or dad? What do I say when they don't ask, but I can tell they're wondering?
There's no single script, but here are some guiding principles that can help these conversations feel less overwhelming: πŸ‘‡

πŸ—“οΈ Follow Their Lead, But Don't Avoid It – Children process at their own pace. Answer questions honestly when they come up, and don't be afraid to open the door yourself gently: "Do you ever think about your mom? It's okay if you do."
πŸ’¬ Keep It Age-Appropriate and Honest – You don't need to share every detail, but avoid lying. A simple, "Your parents had some big struggles that made it hard for them to keep you safe" is honest without being overwhelming.
❀️ Avoid Trash-Talking Their Parents – Even when the full story is difficult, a child's sense of self is tied to their parents. Criticizing them can feel like criticizing part of the child.
πŸ“– Use Their Life Book or Photos – Concrete memories, even hard ones, can help children make sense of their story instead of filling in blanks with fear or self-blame.
πŸŒ€ Expect the Questions to Resurface – Kids often revisit the same questions at different ages, as they grow and understand more. This isn't regression β€” it's healthy processing.
🀍 Validate All Their Feelings – Love, anger, longing, guilt, relief β€” sometimes all at once. Let them know every feeling about their parents is okay to have.
πŸ—£οΈ Reassure Them It's Not Their Fault – Many children carry guilt about their family's circumstances. Remind them, often, that adult problems are never a child's responsibility.
These conversations aren't easy, but showing up for them β€” again and again, with honesty and love β€” helps a child feel safe carrying their whole story. πŸ’™

If you're navigating this and want support, A Greater Hope is here to help.

Kinship care means families don’t have to navigate the journey alone. πŸ’™

When children need care, relatives and close family connections can play an important role in providing stability, love, and support. At A Greater Hope, we walk alongside kinship families every step of the wayβ€”because having the right support can make all the difference.

We’re so thankful to have partnered with Victor Valley College for their recent student orientation event!

Our ECM team works behind the scenes to help individuals and families navigate complex healthcare needs, coordinate doctors' appointments, connect with social services, and get the personalized care they deserve, all at no cost to eligible Medi-Cal members.

Being out on campus to connect students and families with valuable health and wellness resources was an incredible experience. Thank you to the VVC team for having us, and best of luck to all the new students this semester! πŸŽ“βœ¨

πŸ’™ Small Moments, Big Connection πŸ’™
Building trust and connection with a child in foster or kinship care doesn't require grand gestures or perfect moments β€” it happens in the small, everyday things done consistently, with love. Here are simple ways to nurture connection: πŸ‘‡

🍳 Cook Together – Let them stir, measure, or pick the recipe. Cooking side-by-side opens the door to easy, low-pressure conversation.
🚢 Take a Walk – Movement side-by-side (not face-to-face) often makes it easier for kids to open up. No agenda needed β€” just company.
πŸ“– Read Together – Whether it's a bedtime story for a little one or swapping book recommendations with a teen, reading together builds a shared world.
🎢 Listen to Music – Ask them to share a favorite song or artist. Music is often a window into how a child is feeling, and a great way to connect without pressure.
πŸŽ‰ Create a Family Tradition – Taco Tuesdays, a Friday movie night, a special birthday breakfast β€” traditions give kids something predictable to look forward to and a sense of belonging.
🧩 Do a Puzzle or Play a Game – Shared activities with a shared goal build teamwork and easy, natural conversation.
πŸŒ… Find a Daily Check-In Moment – A car ride, bedtime, or the dinner table can become a small, sacred space to reconnect each day.

Connection isn't about doing something big β€” it's about showing up, again and again, in the small moments. Over time, those moments build the trust and security every child deserves. πŸ’™
